Is today (The Nativity of St John the Baptist) mandatory in the U.S.? Also, what is considered and what constitutes a solemnity, a feast, a memorial, or a Holy Day of Obligation?
Edit: I also realized that memorials are also something we celebrate, but to my knowledge, there isn’t many of those.

Feast of St. John the Baptist
Very important feast day today. Just wanted to remind you guys so that you may gain some spiritual benefit through recalling his life. Interesting point, I thought of today as I was reading about him is that his death should be an inspiration to the Church today. To often, as we have endlessly pointed out in this sub, the Church as an institution has failed to defend against the rising tide of sexual immorality. St. John the Baptist was imprisoned and beheaded mainly because he dared to call out the immorality of Herod’s marriage. St John the Baptist ora pro nobis!
