"The job really stretches my patience, and I frequently turn into Basil Fawlty."

This is a sentence I came across while reading a book, obviously written by a British author. Albeit not being British, I am familiar with the British comedy show 'Fawlty Towers' and did get the reference to its hot-tempered protagonist. While there is no actual need for me to translate this sentence, I was wondering how members of this subreddit would translate this sentence into their working languages, even without me providing any additional context :)

It would also be interesting to see whether you choose to

a) preserve the personification and use a name that's familiar to your target culture

or

b) replace the metaphor altogether

Cheers and happy new year ;)

Basil Fawlty is probably a very nice hotelier most of the time. It’s only his struggles with difficult customers that get shown in the TV series.

What shenanigans will occur?

Who would win in a fight if they both armed? (Mr Bean is armed with his red plastic knife and Basil Fawlty is armed with his large garden gnome).

Who would win the armed fight if they both are blood lusted?

I drove Basil Fawlty's Bentley

Background: I worked over ten years in the hospitality industry. From the information desk in a casino to bellman at tropical island resort to front desk at a manor house hotel in the English countryside are among my experiences.

This is the time I drove Basil Fawlty’s Bentley.

If you don’t know who Basil Fawlty is, please enjoy Fawlty Towers

Well anyway, I was working the front desk at the manor house hotel just outside Winchester, England and we were hosting a charity event that drew several VIP’s including Basil Fawlty. We were awaiting his arrival and my Front Desk Manager just had to stay late to check him in. When Basil arrived, the General Manager welcomed him back as he had stayed at the hotel while filming Fierce Creatures. He had pulled up in an older Bentley and the GM called me over. Perhaps thinking that I, the only American on staff, had more experience with a large vehicle with an automatic (he was right,) would Mr. Fawlty like for me to park his car for him?

Mr. Fawlty said yes, and I, thinking there might be a car alarm or some other specialty to the vehicle, asked, β€œIs there anything special I need to know about the car, sir?”

To which, without hesitation, he replied, β€œWell, if I recall, you turn the wheel clockwise and it goes to the right.”

Genius, pure genius.

The only thing I could respond with was, β€œYes, sir.”

He was a very nice guest, and the car performed beautifully.

Looking back, I should have kept the reg card.
