I go into the bathroom, and I see red
I have no more pads, I use paper instead
"Oh please don't leak" I plead and I pray
I already know what people will say
I leave the bathroom with my head held high
But deep down inside, I scream and I cry
The fat men in charge discuss women's pain
They decide that we are just stupid and vain
I go into the bathroom and I see red
Not blood this time, but anger instead
Like I assume most people who follow this sub I've been left in a state of mourning over the passing of Norm Macdonald. Besides Norm only 3 celebrity deaths have hit me in similar ways; the death of Robin Williams and Norm's SNL co-stars Chris Farley and Phil Hartman. The last two died when I was just a child, but for years now when I see a sketch of Chris & Phil there's just a tragic air of sadness as I know that both comedians died so young & horrifically. Phil Hartman's amazing audition for SNL can bring me to tears because I'm left in awe at how good of a performer that man was. I'm often left imagining what if those two continued performing, all the brilliant entertainment humanity likely lost. I anticipate that going forward I will have similar feelings towards Norm, I was looking forward to Norm restarting the Norm Macdonald Live with Adam after damn Netflix let him out of his contract.
The biggest shock of course was finding out that Norm had been valiantly battling cancer for nearly a decade. It was speculated for years why Norm's physical appearance would rapidly change. Many times he would look bloated, and even though he was always funny & insightful his mind could also seem foggy. Now everyone who cared about Norm are left wondering how much of that was due to the cancer. For years Norm made the fans believe what ailed him was drugs, alcohol, and simply old age. Now I wonder if that was all a facade to hide Norm's difficult battle, or was it partially true? Only the closest of Norm's friends, family, and Adam Eget know the truth. And if any of them decided to tell us about the "real" Norm Macdonald I have no doubt I'd be compelled to read/listen to it.
To get to the topic I hope that never happens. Because we do have the Norm Macdonald's biography, "Based on a True Story." And BoaTS is the story of Norm's life that he wanted to tell us; an absurd, hilarious piece of fiction. In BoaTS Norm is a washed up gambling & opiate addicted degenerate, Adam Eget is a barely functional moron. In one chapter Norm writes an incredibly dark & disturbing story involving a family friend & then in the very next chapter he just makes the funniest small sentence that makes me chuckle as I remember it. It's a brilliant work of art, it encapsulates everything that I treasure about Norm Macdonald's humor & storytelling, simply put it is a must read for any fan of his.
