A list of puns related to "Balkan Romance Languages"
Perhaps the question is too broad. But I wonder why in Balkanic countries like Serbia, Croatia or Slovenia they speak Slavic languages, but not a Romance language like is the case in Spain, France or Italy.
Where did Slavic languages originate, and what made them overcome the presence of Latin?
If you know the reason why any other ex Roman territory where they don't speak a Romance language in the present I'd be very interested to hear it.
Thank you in advance!
Title says it all. Why is it romance languages only developed in those specific areas? Or did some languages do develop but then died? It would be super interesting to hear what those languages might have sounded like! Apologies if a similar question has already asked, I am on mobile and the search function super sucks. Or if this would have been better placed in a different subreddit
Tbh, I would chose Dacian.
Especially TV shows

(not enough poll options so Slovenian and Romanian gotta go and Serbo-Croatian gets lumped into one, don't come for me)
I was curious if you know at least some word from each language spoken in the Balkans. This includes unofficial languages like Roma, Hungarian, Slovak, German or other languages that are spoken by minorities in the Balkans.
I know most of you probably prioritize learning, say, German over a closer country's language. I find this a bit sad but still, what'd be the language you're most likely to learn?
My answer is probably Romanian. The second one probably Hungarian and the third one probably Albanian, then maybe Bulgarian. If i'm left with any RAM in my brain probably Turkish.
I'm thinking about languages like the Pre-Greek substrate, sometimes called "Pelasgian" or "Aegean", or generally about any language spoken by the inhabitants of "Old Europe" before the Indo-European migrations.
To make a more specific example, let's assume that a non-Indo-European language was spoken across some islands of the Aegean, like the Cyclades and Rhodes; would it be realistic to think that the language might have survived after the Mycenean (and therefore Indo-European) colonization/conquest of the islands around 1450 BC, and perhaps continued to be spoken by farmers and other illiterate parts of the population during the Mycenean rule and during the Greek Dark Ages (so up to the 8th century BC)?
Herodotus, for example, wrote (56-58) about the Pelasgians and reported that the inhabitants of Placia and Scylace (in Ancient Mysia, so present-day Sea of Marmara) and of the 'city of Creston' (it is unclear if Creston referred to Kreston in Ancient Macedonia or to the Etruscan city of Cortona/Curtun) still spoke a non-Greek language, perhaps being or having originated from Pelasgian, during his times.
>For the people of Creston and Placia have a language of their own in common, which is not the language of their neighbours; and it is plain that they still preserve the fashion of speech which they brought with them in their migration into the places where they dwell.
Thanks in advance for any answers.
I’ve recently started learning a “romance” language and it made me wonder why certain areas of the Roman Empire seem to have had Latin stick as a foundation of their modern language whereas other areas that were occupied or a part of the empire for just as long or longer did not.
Currently trying learn Slovenian or Croatian but the resources for these languages seem to be kind of sparse as far as I can tell, especially when it comes to apps like Duolingo. I was honesty surprised Duolingo doesn’t have one of these languages and was wondering if we will ever see a course added for one?
"without its own country" = they don't have a country or autonomous region of their own

How are we different from the other servers?
I feel there is a demand for some serious content (historical but also mixing with the locals) in these regions. So much history. Bald's trip to Albania wasn't great, his videos aren't kinda shit when he's not speaking Russian.
Anyone out there vlogging in these areas?
