Much of the Balkans once spoke Latin but now speak Slavic languages. In areas where Slavic nobles ruled this is understandable - but what happened in Ragusa/Dubrovnik? How did a Romance-speaking population with strong commercial ties to Italy end up changing its language to Croatian?

Why did Latin evolve into Romance languages in some former Roman territories but not all? Especially the Balkans.

Perhaps the question is too broad. But I wonder why in Balkanic countries like Serbia, Croatia or Slovenia they speak Slavic languages, but not a Romance language like is the case in Spain, France or Italy.

Where did Slavic languages originate, and what made them overcome the presence of Latin?

If you know the reason why any other ex Roman territory where they don't speak a Romance language in the present I'd be very interested to hear it.

Thank you in advance!

Why did there not develop romance languages like French/Spanish/Romanian etc in other areas of the former Roman Empire like Britain and the Balkans?

Title says it all. Why is it romance languages only developed in those specific areas? Or did some languages do develop but then died? It would be super interesting to hear what those languages might have sounded like! Apologies if a similar question has already asked, I am on mobile and the search function super sucks. Or if this would have been better placed in a different subreddit

I know most of you probably prioritize learning, say, German over a closer country's language. I find this a bit sad but still, what'd be the language you're most likely to learn?

My answer is probably Romanian. The second one probably Hungarian and the third one probably Albanian, then maybe Bulgarian. If i'm left with any RAM in my brain probably Turkish.

Would it be realistic to imagine that some pre-Indo-European languages from regions that had become predominantly Indo-European (such as Greece and the Balkans, the islands of the Aegean, northern Anatolia, and so on) survived during the Bronze Age and Iron Age?

I'm thinking about languages like the Pre-Greek substrate, sometimes called "Pelasgian" or "Aegean", or generally about any language spoken by the inhabitants of "Old Europe" before the Indo-European migrations.

To make a more specific example, let's assume that a non-Indo-European language was spoken across some islands of the Aegean, like the Cyclades and Rhodes; would it be realistic to think that the language might have survived after the Mycenean (and therefore Indo-European) colonization/conquest of the islands around 1450 BC, and perhaps continued to be spoken by farmers and other illiterate parts of the population during the Mycenean rule and during the Greek Dark Ages (so up to the 8th century BC)?

Herodotus, for example, wrote (56-58) about the Pelasgians and reported that the inhabitants of Placia and Scylace (in Ancient Mysia, so present-day Sea of Marmara) and of the 'city of Creston' (it is unclear if Creston referred to Kreston in Ancient Macedonia or to the Etruscan city of Cortona/Curtun) still spoke a non-Greek language, perhaps being or having originated from Pelasgian, during his times.

>For the people of Creston and Placia have a language of their own in common, which is not the language of their neighbours; and it is plain that they still preserve the fashion of speech which they brought with them in their migration into the places where they dwell.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Why did Latin influence language in the France and Spain regions, but not in other Roman Empire lands like Egypt or the Balkans?

I’ve recently started learning a “romance” language and it made me wonder why certain areas of the Roman Empire seem to have had Latin stick as a foundation of their modern language whereas other areas that were occupied or a part of the empire for just as long or longer did not.

Discord server for learning Turkish and other languages of Balkan Peninsula and Central Europe

We invite you all to -L-, a new server, which was created to help each other learn the languages of Central Europe and the Balkan Peninsula, chat with native speakers of these languages, and discuss about linguistics. At the moment, we have native speakers of 15 different languages of the region, and this number is steadily growing!

The languages, which the server and its channel focus on, include:
- Turkish

- Polish and Kashubian
- Czech
- Slovak
- Lower Lusatian and Upper Lusatian
- Russian
- Belarusian
- Ukrainian and Rusyn
- Slovenian
- Serbo-Croatian
- Macedonian
- Bulgarian

- Lithuanian
- Latvian

- German

- Latin
- Romanian

- Hungarian
- Finnish
- Estonian

We're also planning to branch out to other languages of the region (Italian, Greek, Albanian, Danish, Swedish, Georgian) as well, depending on the user demand.

How are we different from the other servers?

  1. Simple rules including the ban on speaking English, which means that the server is not about general conversations in English, but about actually learning the languages of the region.
  2. We are not a server for all languages of the world, we focus on a specific region, so there is also a room for the less popular languages, unlike on the other servers, where such languages are put into the "other" channel.
