[TOMT] [FILM] A late 80s/early 90s Medieval/sci-fi film where they had bubble gum, the hero shot a flair gun at an oncoming army, and the bad guy was gruesomely impaled by a wooden pole.

Saw this on VHS in the early 90s as a kid, although could also just be a weird amalgamation of random tv I saw back then. But as my memory tells me, they definitely opened a crate of bubble gum before the big battle... for some reason.

Creeping Determinism And Bad Byzantine History | Field of Glory II: Medieval - Swords and Scimitars

Greetings r/Badhistory. It's me, the pedantic Byzantine Studies poster.

Why do I make today's post? Because of the new upcoming (23rd of September) DLC for Field of Glory 2: Medieval, Swords and Scimitars.

For those of you unaware, Field of Glory 2 is basically a table top wargame but converted for the PC instead of manually moving models and rolling dice. It's good fun. There's the ancient era game and its expansions (Field of Glory 2) and the newer one, Field of Glory 2: Medieval.

The DLC in question is: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1651570/Field_of_Glory_II_Medieval__Swords_and_Scimitars/

For those who can't access the steam link for any reason:

> The Byzantine Empire began the 11th century in a strong position - they had pushed their frontier eastwards against the fragmented Muslim emirates, and had completely destroyed the Bulgars in the Balkans. All that was to change in 1071, when they suffered a catastrophic defeat at the hands of the Seljuq Turks at the Battle of Manzikert. These nomadic conquerors had recently converted to Islam, and had swiftly established a Sultanate ruling from Afghanistan to Palestine. Following Manzikert they took nearly all of Anatolia from the Byzantines.

> As the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos struggled to stem the Seljuq advances, he appealed to the West for mercenaries. This request was seized upon by Pope Urban II, who possibly saw it as an opportunity to further his own aims. At the Council of Clermont in 1095 he called for a Crusade to save the eastern churches and recover the Holy Land from the Muslims.

> The timing was fortuitously right, as the mighty Seljuq Empire had begun to fragment, the Sultanate of Rรปm in Anatolia (modern Asiatic Turkey) having seceded from the Great Seljuk Empire in 1077, and the local Syrian atabegs being in practice semi-independent and disunited. The First Crusade eventually captured Jerusalem in 1099, and established a number of Crusader states in Palestine and Syria. In doing so they created bitter resentment between Muslims, Western Christians and the Byzantines that would lead to two centuries of conflict.

> Several major Crusades were to follow the First, as the Crusader states fought for their existence against a succession of resurgent Islamic states: the Fatimids, Zangids, Ayyubids, and finally the Mamluks, who extinguished the last Crusader stronghold of Acre in 1291.

> Meanwhile, further East, a far greater threat to Islamic civilisation was

Bad/Outdated History in Pop History| The Fourth Crusade as represented in 'Byzantium, the Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire'

Greetings r/badhistory

It's me, the annoying Byzantinist doing research on the Latin Empire.

Anyway, for fun/to get myself early Christmas gifts, I've been getting some books that were on sale. Mostly academic with some historical fiction thrown in. One of the the former, Judith Herrin' 2006 work 'Byzantium, The Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire' is the one we will be discussing today.

The book is not a text for academics per se. It's not filled with footnotes and sources. Instead it aims to outline everything from Constantine I to 1453 in a manner that can be digested by someone new to Byzantine Studies. It's an admirable goal and for the most part they manage this, thought there are a number of pit falls in areas. It does have a section on the back on 'further readings' for each chapter's topic so as a jumping off point for deeper study for a someone new to the area, it would make for a pretty useful book.

My issue is some of the details she has in her representation of the Fourth Crusade and the massacre of the Latins.

> Tensions became inflamed in 1171 and again in April 1182, when Manuel I and his successor, Andronikos Komnenos ordered attacks on Venetian merchants, their property and ships. The losses sustained were so great that the republic made a claim for compensation: this long list of houses, ships and goods destroyed was still not settled in 1203, which probably exacerbated antagonism

(Judith Herrin, Byzantium, The Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire (London : Penguin Book Publishing, 2006), p. 260.)

The issue with this quote is threefold:

Firstly, why use 1171 and 1182 as examples of conflict between Venetians and the Empire instead of those of 1122 and 1171? The former under emperor John Komnenos and the latter under his son, Manuel. If you wanted to paint a picture of imperial conflict against Venetian interests, then surely the two actual wars would paint a better picture? Especially since John lost his conflict and was forced to renew the Chrysobull of 1082, while in Manuel was able to defeat the Venetians. With both expulsions, the Emperors had the time, support and opportunity to risk temporary instability, in exchange for the imposition of Imperial authority. In each occasion, Venice was no longer the sole Italian power operating from Constantinople and their privileged position as both providers of naval support and transport for troops and goods was no longer as vital as it had been when Alexios I had granted the

In line with the ancient miasma theory of diseases, Malaria was thought to be caused by the pestilential fumes of marches, hence the term literally meaning "bad air".

The Chalice of Tears is really not that bad (even enjoyable if you like JPs). You don't have to get 2016-medieval on your own a** ...

... or to rush into it while it's the current content and full of mesmers.

When it was released, many of us SUFFERED in there.

But be happy fellow Tyrians. We're in an age of progress.

Apparently, Dulfy's path, as nice as it was to have her video so soon after release, was not the easiest by far. But when I go to this puzzle, I still see all new players taking it ... because Google doesn't know better (and new players use google rather than wiki). Last time I had to do it for an alt account, using wiki guide, I was definitely not taking the same path as people who were struggling a lot and told me they were using dulfy's vid.

So, grab a Position Rewinder, and heroically venture into Chalice of Tears with the help of the excellent wiki guide.

For taco fans, I assume that there are Taco markers out there using the wiki path rather than dulfy path, that works too :).

The Sims Medieval, Good or bad?

So I suddenly rememberd this game again after 10 years! Man time flies. Installed it again and have tons of fun with it. I find the game really unique, but when I look up reviews or retrospectives I can't find any recent ones, I barely find recent content about it, there are some recent stuff here and there, and the reviews from back in the day are really negative.

But as I said, I'm having alot of fun with it, but when I'm stuck with a quest because the objective is really vague, I have a hard time finding tips on the quest online, or another example I made many heroes after people in my life, so I gave this one friend this eating trait because she likes to eat alot, found out the trait is really annoying since she's constantly hungry, so I figured I stuff her alot so she won't be hungry as quickly, and she ended up gaining weight! And I just cannot figure out how to slim her down again, and I can't find any answers online

So is it just me or isn"t this game talked about alot? I don't see why because I really like the medieval setting, questing, it fits the sims gameplay really well in my opinion, and there's so much potential with this concept!

So what do you guys think of the game? What did you like and dislike? So far the only thing I dislike is that relationships aren't taken into account with quests, My king character married the wizard character, and then I had this quest where the wizard character needed to impress the king and the dialogue was as if they don't even know each other while they are even living together and have a child already! Other then that its great fun!

[PC] [2014-2019] Choice game where you play as a medieval astronomer who pretends to be a doctor and gives bad medical advice

Platform(s): PC (likely on Steam)

Genre: A 'Choices Matter' Puzzle game with multiple endings, That's the best way I can describe it anywho. It was 2d with a sideways view.

Estimated year of release: probably 2014 or sooner though most likely in the 2014 to 2019 range.

Graphics/art style: Hand Drawn style, like if it was drawn on paper if I remember correctly. It had at least two separate colors it would use, light sepia and a gray blue depending on if it was day or night respectively. It was definitely monochrome to whichever color it used though.

Notable characters: I only really remember the main character was a guy who is pretending to be a medical doctor back in the medieval times, he is resounded as one of the best doctors but in reality he is just some astronomer.

Notable gameplay mechanics: As stated previously, you are playing as an astronomer pretending to be a doctor and telling people their ailments when they come to you. You'd often be in your house and people would come to you outside to which you were either on the balcony or were out front of your house with them (don't remember exactly). When someone tells you their symptoms, it takes you to a screen with up to 4 star alignments (like pisces, taurus, etc.) each star alignment has an aliment (which is different every time you use it) and usually is comedic in nature. After telling the person what they have, they will leave and a few days later you will hear about if they got better or worse. I think there was also a part where it mentions that if too many people die you will be investigated by the higher council and will be killed for not being a real doctor? Either way it was some choice game like that where too many failures would result in a bad ending.

Other details: I remember watching a playthrough of the game, I believe it was from ManlyBadassHero (on YouTube) or someone similar, I was randomly thinking of the game and wanted to buy it but couldn't find the playthrough to find the game. The playthrough had to have been at least 6 or more months ago? I just know it definitely wasn't a recent upload.

Thank you for reading

Any Medieval Europe or medieval battle simulators? Preferably with bad graphics/good optimisation.

Lately I've become fascinated with Middle Ages a lot, and I've been searching for some medieval games, but couldn't find any that meet my criteria. Do you know any of these?

"Requirements":

- Realistic, non-fantasy please. The maximum threshold for me is maybe a healing potion, although it's still disgusting, lol. So yeah please recomment non-fantasy games OR fantasy games with mods to remove all fantasy elelements/easy way to remove all fantasy elements. Also realism, so preferably you don't get your head and two arms regenerated in one night.

- Bad graphics.. Yeah, I've got a potato :( Just for comparison, I can run Arma 2 on Very Low on about 20-40 FPS, but older graphics are usually 50-60 FPS (Arma 2-like graphics are okay, I'm used to playing in 25 FPS ;( ) Also, even if the graphics are so old that the character is a white dot and NPC's are yellow dots, I don't care, as long as it's realistic

- Good and realistic medieval gameplay mechanics, and very preferably good and realistic combat system.

- Middle Ages setting - this one is pretty self explanatory.

Thanks for suggestions!

[TOMT][Book] Kids go back to a medieval-esque time to help fight a bad guy - not the Narnia series

My brother brought up this memory of a book from probably the early 1980s or so about a group of kids or teens who went back in time to a medieval kind of era to help fight a bad guy. The only thing he remembers vividly is they sleep in a hay bale and they all get lice. It's not The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe but it is similar to it. Any help?

Super petty question but Medieval Megapack Katana seems really weak or I'm just bad?

This is something that's been bugging me since I noticed it.

I recently got the medieval megapack mod and I tried out a bunch of the weapons. And the katana just feels...really weak?

What I mean by this is that from my understanding of the game, the better your speed and weapon alignment the stronger your hit is. And I assume that if your hit is good, you get the more intense sound effect and a visible slash texture on the enemy to show that your hit was good.

It seems much harder getting that "good hit" with the katana than any other weapon in the game to me. It doesn't matter if it's base weapons, other MMP weapons (even the other japanese weapons work fine to me). The katana sticks out as the one weapon I am really struggling to get that good hit effect with.

Is there any reason this is the case? Am I just not using the weapon right or is there something weird with the numbers? I literally am looking at the weapon data json. It has the same mass and drag as the hand and a half sword but feels so much harder to use

I don't know how to see damage or HP values (side note, is there a mod or setting to see info like that?) so I can't confirm that it's actually weaker or not.

Yeah this bothered me enough for me to make an entire post about it.
