I recently moved into a new apartment complex (~1 month ago) with my boyfriend and his brother. I have two cars, and while I was at work today, a sticker was placed on my second car stating: "VIOLATION. IF YOU DO NOT IMMEDIATELY MOVE THIS VEHICLE, IT WILL BE TOWED AND STORED AT YOUR EXPENSE." The sticker also notes that this is a "no parking area", and there is a hand-written bit that says "car has not moved in over 48 hours"
First off, the car is parked in a designated parking spot, and there are no signs stating that it is a "no parking area". The other cars parked in this area did not have the same notice.
I immediately went to the leasing office to inquire why this sticker was on my window. I was told that the parking lot spots are for guests and residents with one-car garages. The office lady said that since I have a two-car garage attached to my unit, I may not park in the lot, and that my car will be towed if I do not move it off the property immediately.
My problem with this is that before I signed my lease I asked about parking permits, and was told that we can park extra vehicles in any available parking space, and that permits were not issued. Furthermore, my lease CLEARLY states that we are allowed 2 cars per resident. For my unit, that would allow us a total of 6 cars, which we obviously could not fit in a two-car garage. I combed through my lease, and the only reference to parking says that they may "regulate the time, manner, and place of parking of vehicles by anyone". It says that they may tow vehicles if they meet any of a given 12 criteria, of which my car meets none (it's not in a fire lane, it doesn't have a flat tire, etc.).
The lady at the office told me that residents with one-car garages may park extra vehicles in the lot, but since I have a two-car garage I may not park there. I never signed any lease addendum agreeing to this policy, nor was I ever informed of it before today. The lease does not specify who can and can't use the lot, but I was verbally told by a leasing manager that I could use the lot for any or all of my cars. There are no notices of this policy on their website, nor was any notice given to the residents. There are no posted signs that say who can park there. She said that any car that doesn't move for two days will be towed at the owner's expense. I asked her if my car would be towed if I moved it every 2 days and she said no, but basically called me a terrible person for taking up a spot for that car.
