A list of puns related to "American Kenpo"
Long time MA practicioner here who just loves learning about Martial Arts. I have been reading a lot about American kenpo and I realized there seems to be at least 2 styles the Ed parker one which has the 24 techinques per belt. Then there is the Tracy One which has 40 per belt. Are there any other major AK styles?
Interesting fact, Eric Esch, the Butterbean, toughman contest and boxing, has 9 of his 17 wins by submission, and only 8 by knockout.
Hi all! I am looking for an American Kenpo studio in eastern PA (USA) preferably within 1 hour of the Lehigh valley area. My wife was a black belt but hasnβt practiced in about 10 years and would like to get back into it. She would specifically like to find an Ed Parker American Kenpo studio if possible. It seems most of the ones in the area that we can find are out of business but Iβm hoping you all can help!
Just wondering to see if there are any Kenpo enthusiasts.
I took it when I was 14 briefly and saw that a school relocated to 5 minutes down the road from me. I'm already training in Muay Thai and have no interest in swapping, but I wanted to see how it's viewed by the modern martial arts community now.
I may pop in to see what this one is like and if it holds up to how "badass" it looked when I was a kid.
One of my cousins studies kenpo, I was curious about itβs origin. What styles were influencing and incorporating into what it is today. Itβs very interesting. I know Ed parker created it and all, it gives off kung fu-y type of vibes with the techniques. Is is considered a form of kung fu/karate the way it appears to be?
Hey guys, this is my first post here. I'm a Karateka, and I have done Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ before.
So here's my question, is there a difference between traditional kenpo kata and american kenpo kata? Tbh, i didn't know that american kenpo even existed. And is there a difference in the way they train?
well the title says it all
My MT gym is over an hour away, contract ending nect month, and I found a much closer kenpo/kickboxing gym.
Is american kenpo a good substitute for stand up striking? The belt system is alluring and there are famous people like chuck liddel who have trained in it. Or would general kickboxing be preferred?
Thanks.
*edit; I do not compete. Am a 31/m. I do this for exercise and defense purposes.
Hello all,
I have some experience in another style, but I'm just starting my journey with American Kenpo and I really wanted to get a subreddit going for those who practice or are interested in practicing.
Hi guys, anyone aware of a Kenpo school in Calgary?
I am currently attempting to overhaul the /r/martialarts FAQ. One possible element of this overhaul is a section that briefly lists examples of adequate and impressive teaching credentials for each art. I am aware that formal credentials can only tell someone so much, and the main body of the FAQ repeatedly emphasizes the importance of going to trial classes and finding a good individual match between yourself and the instructor- but I'm trying to find some rough heuristics that people can use to evaluate American Kenpo instructors.
I have insufficient knowledge of American Kenpo to write this section for it, and I have a number of questions for this subreddit.
-American Kenpo has no single, centralized authority that controls promotions and enforces a centralized syllabus, correct?
-Are there any regional or offshoot organizations that are large, active, and enforce meaningful quality control on their membership? (Do any of Tracy Kempo, Kajukenbo, Shaolin Kenpo Karate, Bok Fu, or the International Kenpo Council of Grandmasters qualify?)
-Is there a single competitive forum, such as the Mundials for jiu jitsu, the Olympics for judo, or the World Championships for WKF karate, that serves as a 'gold standard' for competitors in American Kenpo?
-Are there any figures other than Ed Parker himself and his teachers William Kwai Sun Chow and James Mitose who ought to be listed as widely acknowledged as good people to see on an American Kenpo instructor's resume?
-Is there anything else that ought to be noted as being a good indicator of an American Kenpo instructor's ability as a teacher or martial artist- something that might be expected to show up on their Web site or resume?
Hey guys. I was introduced to this art from an old instructor at my current school who eventually went on to study Kenpo. I managed to take a couple classes a couple of years ago but I wasn't at a good place in my current art to start on a second one. I'm finally at that point, so I've started back up in American Kanpo. I even managed to find a good instructor that isn't that far from me.
Any Kenpo people on here? (American, or even a different flavor?) Kenpo doesn't seem to be very popular on here.
I started a subreddit, /r/American_Kenpo/ if anyone is interested in posting there as well. People of all kenpo styles are welcome.
Anyone know if there is a club operating in Calgary Alberta?
