Today in Birthdays: Amelia Bloomer (1818 - 1894)

Amelia Jenks Bloomer, born on this day in 1818, was an American women's rights advocate. Even though she did not create the women's clothing reform style known as bloomers, her name became associated with it because of her early and strong advocacy.

By publishing the magazine "The Lily", she became the first woman to own, operate and edit a newspaper for women. Notably, Bloomer also introduced Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to each other.

Today in Labor: In re Debs (1895)

In re Debs (Latin: "In the matter of Debs") was a legal case in which the U.S. Supreme Court, on this day in 1895, unanimously upheld the government's use of the injunction against a labor strike, specifically the Pullman Strike of the following year.

The Pullman Strike was a large national railroad strike led by the American Railway Union (ARU), involving around 250,000 workers in 27 states. The federal government obtained an injunction against the union, Eugene V. Debs, and other boycott leaders, ordering them to stop interfering with trains that carried mail cars. After the strikers refused, President Grover Cleveland forcibly ended the strike with military force.

Debs and four other ARU leaders were arrested and charged with violating the injunction. After the Supreme Court sided with the government, Debs was sentenced to prison and the ARU dissolved.

In re Debs contributed to a widely held belief that the Supreme Court was simply a tool of the wealthy and big business - for the next 40 years business interests hostile to labor unions found the courts willing partners in suppressing strikes through injunction. This practice ended in 1932 with the Norris-La Guardia Act.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Repressed Horror Memories/Trauma?

Do you have a bad memory or trauma caused from watching a horror movie as a child that you buried deep into your subconscious mind, only to have it uncovered many years later?

Spoilers for Trilogy of Terror (1975)...

My example: I was pretty sure I watched Trilogy of Terror as a kid, maybe around 10-12 years old (I was a relative late-bloomer when it came to horror), but I remembered almost nothing about it, except for the Zuni fetish doll, at least the design of it anyway.

Since I was on a horror anthology kick last year, I decided to re-watch it, and it confirmed that not only had I indeed watched it all those years ago, but the very end of the third and final segment, titled "Amelia" (the Zuni doll one), brought back the memory of being frozen in fear, terrified of the image of >!Karen Black, as Amelia, being possessed by the spirit of the Zuni hunter, stabbing at the carpet with a knife while staring dead-eyed into the camera. Here's the spoiler scene as a reminder: https://youtu.be/1r7UcKm2xnk?t=491!< ; to the point of not being able to sleep for days without that horrifying image seared into my brain.

Of course the impact of the scene had worn off watching it again 35-or-so years later, but for a very brief moment I was that terrified kid again. I had a similar experience while re-watching the final scene of Burnt Offerings (1976), coincidentally also starring Karen Black, but not nearly to the extent of Trilogy of Terror.

Conclusion: Karen Black was an amazing actress that ruined my childhood in the best possible way.

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat

 4. Mrs Depew 3106: https://www.etsy.com/listing/596644825/vintage-sewing-pattern-1920s-ladies?ref=shop_home_recs_1&crt=1
