TIL of Operation Dragoon, the Allied landing of Southern France on 15 August 1944 with an invasion force of more than 500,000 troops consisting mostly of American and French troops. It was supposed to take place in conjunction with the D-Day landings but a lack of ressources did not permit it.

TIL about Operation Pluto, an operation to lay submarine oil pipelines under the English Channel in support of the Allied invasion of Normandy during WWII. The two pipelines, "Bambi" and "Dumbo", carried 180 million imperial gallons of petrol to the Allied Expeditionary Force in North West Europe.

Australian troops on the western front WW1. Aussies were one of only 2 allied nations which were an entirely volunteer force (the other was South Africa), conscription was proposed twice but lost in a landslide vote. Only making up 10% of allied forces, the aussies captured almost 25% of all land.
