The Three Amigos of Cinema have taken Hollywood by storm. del Toro, Cuaron, & Iñárritu have consistently created the most brutal, magical, & surreal films of the past two decades.
Focusing on the eccentric former radio host born from Mexico City, Iñárritu has had perhaps the most bleak & unrelenting film offereings then his fellow compatriots.
An Iñárritu film, known for being laden with conflicts against racism, establishments, & social structure. These heady real world themes are delivered wrapoed in an almost absured extraordinary premise to translate the mundane into the cinematic.
An Iñárritu protagonist is a snapshot of a flawed human being about to have the worst day of their lives. As in the case of 21 Grams. Sean Penn's charecter is a survivor of heart failure due to the transplant of a recently deceased father of two equally deceased daughters due to being victims of a hit & run from a Christian former addict/con...on paper you can't get closer to a feature length Soap Opera. However, Iñárritu's harsh realistic writing (with the help of Guillermo Arrigga for his first three films) & ability to pull out the most authentic performances from his actors forces you to take these absurd plots as seriously as a heart attack. Coupled with the collaboration with award winning visionary cinematographers Rodrigo Prieto & Emmanual Lubezki. Gives Iñárritu the creative freedom to direct to his vision and hold every bit of the process accountable as a meticulous madman.
90% of his films are devoid of any type of humor. Which for some viewers makes it seem less real. Human beings find nervous comedy in even the most devastating tragedies but the Mexican filmmaker rips out any leavity and offers zero relief. This can lead to his films being considered miserable to sit through. However the craft and detail of his films makeup for the constant unrest and drab settings. Most of the time.
So how has a filmmaker this serious responsible for one of the greatest comedies ever created in 2015's Birdman? Craft and detail. Iñárritu is always looking to not only break down barriers and expectations but utterly obliterate obstacles. It wasn't enough for the most serious man in the industry to try a lighter fair of the medium. He had to present the film in a way that was genre breaking. Comedies rely on timing. Quick cuts from jokes to reactions is how you get the

Here come the Men in Black! Barry Sonnenfeld's "Men In Black", the film that famously got Leo his Oscar joins the /r/FilmSurvivor Hall of Fame. This thriller about Hugh Glass and his story of Vengeance takes down "Babel" in the finals.
"Babel" is another one of Iñárritu's intertwining stories; it ends up swept in the finals and 1 round short of a spot in the Hall of Fame. The final film in the "Death Trilogy", won't make it into the Hall of Fame this time around just like it didn't make it in with the Brad Pitt Survivor.
And lastly, Here's a (kinda changed) quote for those who are disappointed in the result...
"You [Vote For "Babel"], I'll kill you. I'll kill you!"

Were there any films that should have been eliminated earlier or stayed in longer? Did we make the right final choice?

Alejandro González Iñárritu is the most critically successful of the Three Amigos, having now won two Best Director Oscars (in addition to two more for writing and producing Birdman), but he has always been decidedly my least favorite of the three. When he was younger, he liked to tell his movies out of chronological order, but with seemingly no reason. It seemingly wasn’t in order to better build the narrative emotion, saving the most emotional, or maybe even best scene, for the end. His work seemed to jump around in time at random. I personally feel like he then looked at the acclaim and artistic success that Alfonso Cuaron had with his single take shots in Children of Men and decided “oh, I can do that too” and so constructed Birdman to flow like a single shot throughout the movie. Why? Does it add something to the narrative? I didn’t think so, but it sure was cool looking. He then saw that he didn’t have the serious weight that Cuaron added to his movies and so he made one of the most hyper serious movies ever made, plus taking his cue from much of Cuaron’s poetic approach to his material, and went for it to the extreme in The Revenant. None of this feels organic to Iñárritu’s, to me. It feels like he doesn’t know who he is as a filmmaker. However, that doesn’t mean that he’s a bad filmmaker, on the contrary I have liked all of his movies. These are just observations I’ve had from watching his work.
What about you, FG?
My ratings for his work:
If there’s a filmmaker you want to see in these discussions, just make a suggestion either here in the comments or PM me.
The new Directors Discussion will start being posted only on Mondays. I have a series of lists that will be alternating with the Directors Discussion. So we’ll have a Directors post on Monday and one of the new lists on Thursday. Hope you enjoy!

I posted a thread the other day about how I thought it would be cool to do a "Director of the Week" post to discuss that director's filmography. I was met with some support so I decided to just say "fuck it" and try it out. This is a bit of a trial post, and if this isn't met with the support I'm looking for I'm just going to discontinue it. Anyway, I thought for my first post would be fitting to discuss the reigning Academy Award Winner for Best Director.
Alejandro González Iñárritu
Born: Mexico City, Mexico
Years Active: (2000-Present)
Alejandro González Iñárritu is a Mexican film director known for his evocative style and character driven films. Iñárritu often constructs the plots of his films around a theme, and intertwines both characters and the plot around that theme. Often, his characters share no screen time together and have no idea who each other are in terms of the plot. However, they are ultimately connected by this overarching theme. This is the case with Iñárritu’s first three films, Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel. His latter two films, Biutiful and Birdman or (the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), stray away from this formula, and focus more on a singular character in the midst of an exsistential crisis. But, as in all Iñárritu films, the power is in the characters. Iñárritu’s films also are dominated by an overarching theme; usually a societal critique. His films are powerful and determined to spread that message. Still, many feel as though Iñárritu is too shallow in his films, as he is very condescending towards modern mainstream society. Cinematic, yet grounded in realism, Iñárritu’s style is unmistakable in his films.
Amores Perros (Life’s a Bitch)
2000, Mexico
Iñárritu’s first feature length film follows the lives of three unconnected people, who by happenstance their lives collide in a deadly car accident. The three people: a hip hop music mogul, a magazine publisher, and a hitman, are all connected thematically to one another. They each are dealing with their own personal issues and coming to face life’s harsh realities. One of those realities being fate. The three characters are also tied together by their dogs, as each furry friend represents the qualities the three human characters desire to have. It is a story of violence and class; a comment on the cultural infrastructure of modern society. This film is said to be heavily influenced by Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs.

I have stumbled upon this painting from someone I know who works in the film industry. I was told it was painted by Academy Award Winning Director Alejandro González Iñárritu, though I cannot find anything about it online.
Does anyone have more information on it?
