Let's get this out of the way first... proof: http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/04/04/sara.childers/ https://twitter.com/SaraChilders/status/388470111817850880
About me? Well, there isn't much, I suppose (honestly! I consider myself to be a super nerd... and also super boring). I was born in 1991 to typical parents, and then diagnosed at 24 months with autism. Because so little about this disorder was known at the time, I was not given a diagnosis of "high-functioning" or "low-functioning". My mother (bless her soul) quit her job and devoted her life to me from then on, taking me to see the top therapists and neurologists she could find.
At age nine, I began to menstruate without any prior breast development. After lots and lots and lots of medical tests and wrong diagnoses (from precocious puberty to neurofibromatosis), I finally was seen by Dr. Marco Danon of Miami Children's Hospital, one of the leading doctors in McCune-Albright research. He diagnosed me, and then because of how rare the disorder was, I was used to teach doctors and residents about it.
More about McCune-Albright Syndrome can be found here: http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/mccune-albright-syndrome
Today, I am a junior at my local University, majoring in biomedical science (I have a full load of classes right now - organic chemistry II, calculus I, and biology of microorganisms; each science class has a lab with it as well). I am maintaining a 3.0 GPA (which, believe you me, I am unhappy about... it needs to be higher in my opinion!). Recently, I had a run-in with some hormonal problems in which I was menstruating for eight months straight, even while I was on the strongest oral contraceptive possible. The doctors thought I had endometrial cancer or acromegaly; both of these diagnoses were wrong. It turns out my menstruation was just a "freak" occurrence due to my McCune-Albright syndrome.
My ultimate goal is to be a cetacean (whale, dolphin, and porpoise) pathologist. I plan on getting my veterinary degree from the University of Florida, which has an aquatic animal health program.
Ask me anything!
