Long story… here we go:
Orange cat was tearing up my yard. I called City of North Augusta, they said they don’t deal with cats. They also said they won’t issue me a trap.
No biggie.
Messaged the Aiken County Animal Shelter (FOTAS) on Facebook, they said, “yes! We accept cats! Bring it!”… so I did.
I got to FOTAS, was turned away because, “we only accept kittens”… but that’s not what they told me via Facebook messenger… not to mention they NEVER answer their phones…
OK! So what do I do now? I have this orange cat in the back of my car, city of north augusta won’t take it, FOTAS won’t take it… I called a vet in Aiken and asked how much euthanasia was.
She cried. I felt tremendously awful I had to ask, but I didn’t have any other options… she asked me to go over to the SPCA Albreight Center around the corner, so I did.
I walked into the SPCA, spoke to the receptionist, explained the situation and she said, “FOTAS said WHAT?!?!”, and I was like, “yep. This cat is tearing up my mulch and recently I noticed kittens…” she was so angry. She looked over at her manager in the other room and said, “we’ll take the cat”.
They took the cat. Awesome. A week goes by and here comes orange cat in my yard, again. I call the SPCA and they said the cat is chipped, so the owner was called and they picked it up.
I kindly asked if the owner lives nearby, they said the owner lives in the neighborhood, but can’t give me a name, address or phone number.
Ok. So lets’s jump to last night, shall we?
I set up the same trap, same place and come outside this morning and BAM, cat. But wait, this is a solid black kitten with adorable yellow eyes. It’s scared.
I remembered, FOTAS accepts kittens! So I message them on Facebook, with no response. I call NUMEROUS times, with no answers…
I did the run around again. Called SPCA, they said to call Aiken County Animal Control, I told them they don’t deal with cats. So they then told me to call Aiken County Code enforcement, so I did. They transferred me to Aiken County dispatch, and took my information.
I’m now waiting on a call from an officer / sheriff to tell me what I’m supposed to do with a young kitten in my garage that’s been there since 4am…
Anybody had to deal with this before? Is there a fast track to getting this handled? Am I at a loss?
