Aesudan in relation to Kaladin

So did I miss something? On the coppermind it states Aesudan is related to Kal and his family. I know Hessina has a light eyed parent so is that how they are related?

Idk how on Roshar I missed this detail. Guess I’ll need another reread starting tonight.

Edit: thank you everyone!

Queen Aesudan (spoiler)

So I'm reading through the books for a second time when I noticed a detail during the whole storming the castle sequence in Kholinar. "'I can hear her,' Elhokar said. 'That's her voice, singing.' I know that tune, Kaladin thought" Now, I was curious at first because I had assumed it was a connection on the spren/cognitive realm/Magic hooey side of things. But after Googling, there were a lot of results referencing a possible familial connection between Kal and the Queen through his mother, Hesina. Does anyone know exactly what this was really referring to? Or at least have a more educated guess? Edit: I want to specify that I want to know why Kaladin recognized the song, not necessarily if he was related to the queen.

Amaram & Aesudan

Hello everyone :)

I finished Oathbringer last night (I loved it!) and was left with a few questions, one in particular about the two characters mentioned in the title. Be aware that this post will contain major spoilers for Oathbringer, and I ask you to please not mention anything about Rhythm of War in the replies, thank you!

In the final confrontation between Amaram and Kaladin, Amaram ingests a gemstone that apparently contained Yelig-Nar. Kaladin notes, upon realizing Amaram swallowed the stone, that this is reminiscent of Queen Aesudan when he saw her during the battle at the palace in Kholinar. However, the gemstone seemed to have a much faster and more severe effect on Amaram, he pretty much immediately starts sprouting crystals from his skin. When we encountered Aesudan, she was obviously being corrupted, but not to the same extent as Amaram, even though the gemstone was implied to have been inside her for much longer (presumably since before she had Pai executed in Words of Radiance? I'm not really sure).

Now I'm wondering why the effects of the gemstones were different for them. Were the powers of the stone amplified for Amaram because Odium was near during the battle? Or because he was already being corrupted by the Thrill/Nergaoul? Are there more of these stones that can be ingested and does that mean the stones only contain fragments of Yelig-Nar? Or did the Unmade leave Aesudan when it joined with Amaram? With the gemstone inside of Amaram being destroyed, does that mean Yelig-Nar is now free or does it mean only a part of him is free and in order to unleash his full power all of the gemstones need to be destroyed? I've honestly been thinking about this ever since finishing the book.

Maybe this is all very obvious and the answer to these questions just went over my head while reading. Should that be the case, I'm sorry I just made you read all this. Also, if this gets explained in Rhythm of War, I would be grateful if you didn't include that in your replies because I haven't read it yet, but I would like to hear your theories :)

[WOR] Aesudan's Importance

I am curious how Aesudan's role will expand in future books. I can see her becoming an antagonist in future books. Her extravagance and waste of food, her execution of Pai, and the subsequent riots are sure to draw the ire of Dalinar, and maybe Elhokar. I only say Elhokar because I see him realizing the truth of the Desolations and Aesudan is threatening the end of Alethkar with darkeyes rioting over her misuse of power. This summarily threatens Elhokar's power. Navani will definitely not like what is happening. Even Jasnah wanted her to be watched and assassinated.

Anyone else have other theories about Aesudan's importance or lack thereof?

Political readings of the Stormlight Archives: nuclear weapons, the Iraq war, and colonialism

Pretty much every interesting work of art has a political dimension, and while I deeply enjoy probing the cosmere books for their textual mysteries (like where the plot will go or the mechanics of the magic systems), I also thing it's fun to take these books as works with a clear political message.

To that end, here are three political readings of The Stormlight Archive books, as we currently have them. Spoilers for all currently-published Stormlight books.

Shardblades are nuclear weapons/WMDs

This one should be pretty obvious.

The dead shardblades wielded by human armies parallel the political implications of nuclear weapons in our world fairly closely. They represent a destructive force an order of magnitude above all other conventional weapons, necessitating a complete reappraisal of military strategy, and concentrate this power in the hands of individuals, reminiscent of U.S. presidents with their finger on the proverbial 'big red button'.

Like nuclear weapons, shardblades are the primary material way that a state asserts its military power and legitimacy. The two major forces in Roshar, Alethkar and Jah Kaved, hold similar numbers of shardblades and are thus in stalemate with each other, a kind of 'cold war'. Smaller countries, like the Azish satellite states, usually have only one or two shardblades, if that, and mostly rent them from benefactors, like how Russia distributed nukes to Ukraine, Belarus etc. at the outset of the 1990s. This is why a large part of Words of Radiance follows Adolin trying to win shardblades by dueling Sadean loyalists: it's a way to defang your geopolitical enemies.

Similarly, when the Horneaters want to gain political legitimacy, they don't aim to unite themselves or form a standing army - instead they try to win a shardblade. This calls to mind the many micronations who've tried to develop their own nuclear programs in our world. Naturally, Roshar's major players have a vested interest in stopping that from happening, which is why Rock's expedition is murdered extra-legally by Sadeas. The public fiction is that anyone (even darkeyes or foreigners) has a right to shardblades or nuclear force, but in reality this is reserved for the powers that be.

As Orwell wrote in his essay You and the Atomic Bomb, the rarity and tight control of nuclear weapons/shardblades is exactly what allows them to establish certain states as dominant. That's why yo

4 Theories on Kaladin's Grandparents and a Mysterious Melody

So during my most recent re read of Stormlight I once again was struck by one particular oddity. Well two mostly unrelated oddities. The confusing detail of Hesina's parents and the song Kaladin recognizes Aesudan singing during the assault on Castle Kholinar.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

In case you aren't in the know Kaladin's mom's parents are brought up a strangely large amount. This is despite the fact that Kaladin's character Arc has more been about his relationship with his father than anything else and we know absolutely nothing about that side of the family and the fact that Kaladin has literallynever met his grandparents. It seems odd to me that Brandon would create a mystery like this. Past mysteries on this level generally have a decent amount of connection to the plot but this doesn't seem to contain world shattering information. Naturally this means I want to know more. So let's cover the basics.

We know Hesina's dad despite being dark eyes weilds a sword. We know from a word of Brandon that one of Hesina's parents (presumably her mother based on the previous statement) is actually light eyed. We also know that she is related in some convoluted way to Aesudan. We also know her parents didn't particularly like Lirin but I'm not sure how related that is. Moving on to Aesudan and her song. In Oathbringer Kaladin and the gang are invading the castle with the sole goal of saving Aesudan and Gavinor. While sneaking up on the queen but before learning she's on the side of Odium Kaladin hears her singing. He recognizes the song but he doesn't know from where and associated it with his mother. So now that we've covered that I've prepared 4 possible theories to try to get to the bottom of this. And now like Dalianr to the assembled dignitaries of Azir I present them to you now.

THEORY ONE: THE LIGHT EYED AFFAIR

So this seems the simplest explanation for the Hesina's parents mystery but it does little for the second half so I offer this first. Why are Hesina's parents important? Clearly shes actually related to a line of Alethi nobility. I'm not saying Kaladin is close behind Gavinor in line for the throne or anything but it would have some interesting implications. Some Alethi light eyes are related to the ancient Knights Radiant which is where they get their eye color and supposed mandate for rule. If Kaladin is related perhaps he was related to Sylphrena's old Knight. Perhaps she used the residual connection to her Knight to bring herself into the ph

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Rereading Oathbringer as a father..

My daughter is 1 and I'm reading OB for the first time since her birth.

In Ch. 84 when they confront Aesudan (sp?) and find Gavinor essentially caged and tortured, and then he is afraid of his dad whom he doesn't recognize. Now being able to empathize with what he must be feeling, reading that is absolutely horrific. Think it's the first time I've cried in grief from a book.
