I was wondering which ad-supported streaming service had the fewest ads. So I measured a few.
- The videos were all about 44 minutes long; all were episodes from TV series.
- I started a stopwatch as soon as the video started; If there was an ad at the beginning of the video, I started the stopwatch when the ad started.
- I stopped the stopwatch when the video was complete.
- I subtracted the actual video length from the total playtime recorded by the stopwatch; this should have given me the length of the ads that played during the video.
Here are the results:
Service - minutes:seconds of advertising time in a 44 minute episode
- Tubi - 2:51
- Peacock - 4:12
- IMDB - 5:41
- Plex - 6:40
- VUDU - 7:08
- Crackle - 8:07
- Roku - 8:28 (test performed by KyloRenegade16)
- Pluto - 12:27
- The CW - 12:34
Both Crackle and Pluto were "backending" ads. The placed a commercial break just before the last scene in the video and stuffed it with ads. The last Crackle commercial break was almost 3 minutes and the last Pluto commercial break was over 3 and 1/2 minutes long.
I guess they figure that if someone has viewed almost an entire episode, they aren't going to turn off the TV and miss the ending, no matter how long the commercial break is.
These episodes, being 44 minutes long, were designed to play on network TV in a 1 hour time slot. Meaning they were designed to be accompanied by 16 minutes of commercials. Even if you are watching on Pluto, you are watching fewer commercials than you would if you saw it on over-the-air or cable TV.
I'm sure these numbers aren't set in stone. I wouldn't be surprised if they varied from episode to episode. I did only do one episode per service.
If anyone wants to do another service, put the results in the comments and I'll update the results at the top. Just remember, do a video that is about 44 minutes long--a typical long TV episode.
Someone a while ago tipped me off to this, and I've had no problem doing it for all the subsequent Kindles I've had (and family's Kindles). I'm not sure if you have to have Prime for them to extend this courtesy (I have Prime), but I've always just contacted customer support and politely requested that they remove the ads for free, and they've never given me any problem about it.

Hello iOS devs. As per title, how do you go about marketing your iOS app? What worked/didn’t work for you? I’m interested in particular to free and ad supported, non-game apps. With ads, a lot of traffic is needed to make the app profitable, and getting the required visibility is very hard. I’ve tried various ad networks (Google Ads, Twitter, Search Ads) and I had the best results with Search Ads. However each install costs around 1-2$. To recoup that expense with ads that user has to stick with the app for a few months and of course that does not always happen, which results in loss of money. I also tested ASO which helped reach 20-25 daily downloads, which is not too shabby but also only allows for a very slow growth.
It's basically unwatchable especially if you're used to not watching commercials. Also, I tried to watch sports on there and it was also terrible. The resolution was very bad, very pixelated and couldn't find a national professional broadcast, like only small local broadcasters which was pretty annoying. I tried to watch a nhl game and the announcement was in Spanish.
Edit to say the service I have is a part of the wireless service I recently acquired through Verizon. It comes with Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.
I have been on the 2013 version Kindle since 2014 but am starting to have issues with the battery keeping a charge (off and on, not consistently) . I bought the current 2019 version and everything is completely different!
How do I import my collections and library? I have tried to sync multiple times, but it just shows the "cloud library" I have 15 years of books and collections, my collections is how I know I've read something. Help?

I don't use streaming services (have a semi curated local selection).
Having just moved from Shitsung to Pixel Pro 6 I thought I could continue using Shitsung Music which allowed me to select folders or edit tracks en masse with with album tags. It was a simple application. YT music doesn't show a lot of music (folders not tagged with album or track numbering). Alas the app is not available.
What are the best options aside from YT music? I noticed I can use the Files app to reach folders or individual tracks but it's still clunky.
I recently got a free promo for the ad supported version of discovery+. The problem is I loathe commercials. I'd gladly give Discovery $24 for the year to upgrade it to add-free (The difference between the cost of the two versions). Is there anyway to do this?

I love YTTV. Picture quality, UI, compatibility, it's all great, but I probably wouldn't pay for YTTV year-round if not for NBA LeaguePass (the NBA's platform might as well be from 2012, it's total trash).
Last year, YTTV offered both versions of LP—ad supported, and ad free—just like every other provider on earth. But this year, apparently, YTTV removed the ad-free package, which I didn't realize until after I purchased it for the full season.
Unless YTTV brings back the ad-free option I'm going to have to move to a different provider, which is a bummer, plus I'm stuck watching ads all year and missing the in-stadium content.
Anyone else in the same boat? Or is it there and I'm missing it?
