Real goal of Abu Kamal push
the western backed Rebel push east towards the Euphrates looks a bit weird on the first glance. They obviously dont really care about connecting to Ghouta, and the Loyalist offensive into their strategic hinterland also didnt have much of an effect on this offensive. One could say the small numbers factor into this behavior, but i think its something different. they dont really care about the whole huge stretch of desert along the iraqi border. Their goal is Abu Kamal, once they reached and conquered the town they will probably abandon most parts of the desert they are holding now and create an Euphrates Shield like enclave around the town. Americans and their Sunni allies (Jordan/Saudi Arabia) cant allow Abu Kamal to fall into Loyalists or Shia hands.
