[Oahu] - 3(ish) day/2 night trip to Waikiki
Hi all - did a search and couldn't find a recent post for a quick visit to Waikiki, so thought I'd kick one off.
My wife and I are planning a 3 day trip to Oahu on our way home from Japan. We'd love to see more of Hawaii but the way the flights ended up, this was all we could manage this time. This is our first visit, so we'd love to get a sense for the state, and see if it's somewhere we'd like to go back to and spend more time!
Couple things, we're pretty active and like to do/see things when we travel, however we will also have just got done from a big sightseeing trip in Japan, so we're looking forward to a couple days rest and relaxation too.
Current thoughts:
Day 1, arrive 9/10am:
- Go to Pearl Harbor or Diamond Back
- Check in, explore Waikiki, take an easier day
Day 2:
- Get up early and either do Pearl Harbor or Diamond Back, whatever we didn't do day 1
- Drive around as much of the island as possible - Is going all the way east (edit), and then up the coast to the north coast and back past the Dole plantation too much? We figured we'd stop here and there, but unfortunately would be limited to seeing most things from the car.
Day 3, leave by noon/1pm:
- Lazy morning, need to head to airport shortly after lunch
Is this realistic? Anything else you'd recommend we should plan around? We can definitely push a couple more things in, especially if it will help us experience more of the real Hawaii beyond just Honolulu and Waikiki.
Also would love suggestions around Waikiki to fill in the free time? We're not sit on the beach people, but would like to relax by not having set plans and seeing how we feel in the afternoon on arrival, morning before we leave, etc.
Additionally:
- We're currently looking at staying at the Westin Surfrider. Any thoughts/other hotel recommendation?
- I'm between renting a car for the whole time from the airport (& paying for parking), and just using uber and renting a car for day 2 somewhere local - any recommendations there? It'd be great to do a private tour of some sort, but they seem pretty expensive vs. renting a car.
