Is Ungern-Sternberg still fun to play?

I heard that Ungern-Sternberg used to have a really interesting path for Mongolia, but a lot of it was scrapped for the sake of realism. How different is Ungern-Sternberg's Mongolia from previous iterations of the mod? Can he still proclaim himself the reincarnation of Ghengis Khan? Can you still try to expand into a new Mongolian Empire? Most of all, is it still fun?

Roman von Ungern-Sternberg aka the Bloody Baron would make a great epsiode

While listening to today’s episode I was reminded of Roman von Ungern-Sternberg he was a White Russian general who went insane and took his army to become a Mongolian warlord. While in Mongolia he teamed up with some princes and the Bogd Khan (Mongolia’s Buddhist leader) and attempted to chase the Communist party out of the nation. I can’t even begin to explain all the insane shit he did but the book β€œThe Bloody White Baron” by James Palmer is an excellent source.

Roman Von Ungern-Sternberg stays in effective control of Mongolia until the end of the Russian Civil war-What happens next?

I’m not some Kaiserreich or HOI player who thinks that he can somehow burst out of the steppe and remake the Mongolian Empire, or re-establish the Russian Empire. He’s a mad warlord with tiny, dwindling resources, no industry in the territory he controls, no international support. If he lives out the decade, it’s a miracle. There’s no chance of him having a tank, a plane, an armoured car etc. The best he’s got is some machine guns and cavalry.

But, what he does have is an incredibly strategic position. For him to survive, I’d say Japan has to reach an agreement with the Soviet Union to withdraw from Vladivostok and in turn, the Soviet Union does not interfere with Mongolia and Manchuria. Japan, while it has plans for the region, does not yet have the resources to launch its invasion of China yet, even as China is in the throes of the warlord era. Sternberg thus has free reign in Mongolia.

Sternberg is an eccentric fanatic. He’s the kingmaker in the region, with a dedicated corps of Cossacks and steppe horsemen, but he never sought to make himself Tsar or Khan. He’s such a monarchist he believes in absolute autocracy by god/blood whatever, he’s a lunatic but he doesn’t want to take absolute power himself.

In the brief time Ungern was in Mongolia, he left Mongolian affairs to the Bogd Khan, but he terrorised the minority Russian community and White Russian exiles. As the civil war winds down, exiles flood into Mongolia (not many-most flee to Europe or America). Very few stay in Mongolia, because Mongolia is poor and Ungern is an unhinged lunatic.

The only White Russians who stay in Mongolia are the absolute die hard anti Bolshevik forces and the desperate. The Cossacks, the remnants of the aristocracy, refugees from Siberia trickle in over the rest of the 20s. Ungern bolsters his forces, but not by much. He brutalises and kills many who join him. His forces launch raids into Siberia and much like how the Red Army fights bandits and rebels in the Caucasus in the late 20s, there’s a low level of conflict that persists in the region for the rest of the decade. Ungern absolutely does not take any Russian territory. The Red Army has tanks, planes, fuel and far greater resources at this point. He’s a nuisance. At best, Soviet children get told to behave or β€œthe bloody baron will get you”.

In China, Ungern enjoys some success. The fractured nation is home to many Turkic peoples, Buddhists and anti-communists, and these people may even join Ungern willingl
