No particular reason why, and I won't call him underrated because he's pretty beloved in Hong Kong, but the man is a phenomenal actor who simply because he hasn't made the move to Hollywood, I feel doesn't get the international love he deserves. He hasn't given a single bad performance from what I've seen. His work in every Wong Kar-wai collaboration is outstanding.
And honestly, as great as The Departed and DiCaprio is and as cheesy and overblown some of Infernal Affairs is, Leung's performance in the latter always draws me in again and again. There's this stretch before the third act where he silently witnesses the death of two of his closest confidants, entirely silent yet his beautiful acting carries it brilliantly, the sort that can be appreciated by everyone regardless of what language you speak.
He's quite famous in Asia. Two of his famous movies are the Infernal Affair and Red Cliff.
I rented a film over 10 years ago that starred or featured Tony Leung Chiu-Wai. I knew nothing about it, have never heard of it before or after seeing it, have never heard anyone refer to it. I only rented the film because I like a lot of other films that Tony Leung Chiu-Wai has been in. It was in (I assume) Cantonese. The only other detail I remember about the film is that Tony Leung Chiu-Wai played a camp, gay or transvestite character, I can't remember which. It was definitely not Happy Together, one of my favourite films, or anything else directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Xposted to r/movies.
