A list of puns related to "The Wise Man's Fear"
My mother has been sick for four years now, she's been through brain surgery for a tumor and now she's dying. I may lose her tonight or tomorrow or any day now. I'm lucky enough, I'm 24yo and she's been a great mother, especially when I was really young and she taught me how to read when I was only 4 years old with The Hobbit and Geronimo Stilton fantasy books. I haven't really been able to talk to her in weeks, maybe more than two months now.
Fantasy books helped me a lot through the bad bits of my life but I think that the seventh chapter of The Wise Man Fear makes that book my favourite. I've read the critics about Kvothe as a character and I find a lot of them very valid, but especially in this last bit I really relate to him.
>>!My mother brushing my hair. The feel of her arms around me. The perfect way my head fit into the curve of her neck. How I would sit, curled in her lap next to the fire at night, drowsy and happy and safe. These were the worst memories. Precious and perfect. Sharp as a mouthful of broken glass. I lay in bed, clenched into a trembling knot, unable to sleep, unable to turn my mind to other things, unable to stop myself from remembering. Again. And again. And again. Then there came a small tapping at my window. A sound so tiny I didnβt notice it until it stopped. Then I heard the window ease open behind me. βKvothe?β Auri said softly. I clenched my teeth against the sobbing and lay still as I could, hoping she would think I was asleep and leave. βKvothe?β she called again. βI brought youββ There was a moment of silence, then she said, βOh.β I heard a soft sound behind me. The moonlight showed her tiny shadow on the wall as she climbed through the window. I felt the bed move as she settled onto it A small, cool hand brushed the side of my face. βItβs okay,β she said quietly. βCome here." I began to cry quietly, and she gently uncurled the tight knot of me until my head lay in her lap. She murmured, brushing my hair away from my forehead, her hands cool against my hot face βI know,β she said sadly. βItβs bad sometimes, isnβt it?" She stroked my hair gently, and it only made me cry harder. I could not remember the last time someone had touched me in a loving way. I shook again, tasted plum, and suddenly the words were pouring out of me. βShe said I sang before I spoke. She said when I was just a baby she had the habit of humming when she held me. Nothing like a song. Just a descending third. Just a soothing sound. Then one da
... keep reading on reddit β‘We have seen two out of three of these happen already and there have been many posts about what this foreshadowing mean and what the third is going to be. Most people think it will be about Loreen and I agree to some extent. But I was also thinking, since we know Kvothe will be betrayed by someone close to him, I believe this has something to do with the anger of a gentle man. The most gentle person we have seen, I believe, is none other than Sim, Kvothe's close friend. I think Kvothe will do something to anger him, maybe something to do with Fela, like causing her death or something, and Sim will betray Kvothe and cause him to be "killed".
What do you think about this? Could this have any traction in the next book?
I'm currently in the middle of my first re-read since I first read the novels in the early 10s, so apart from remembering the story in broad strokes I have to a large degree forgotten the details. As I am now 3/4ths into The Wise Man's Fear I realize that I had forgotten almost this entire novel while I remembered several events in Name of the Wind. I suspect this is in part due to finding it quite tedious; I have hardly ever been engaged in the story since Kvothe left Severen.
Particularly at this point in the story where he's spending time in Ademre I keep wanting the story to progress which it never really seems to do, what otherwise has been so engaging with the story (the characters, the wit, the descriptions, the character development) seems at a standstill. When considering how much time Kvothe seem to spend narrating it in-world it would take up half of a day of storytelling, and from what we've been told about his life there is plenty and plenty more of his life left to narrate before the story is finished, so how much time is spent here just seems a little unnecessary both for me as a reader and in the meta perspective of the listeners in the Chronicler and Bast.
Sorry to rant about it, I just wanted to air my opinions to others who have read the novels.
Hereβs what I liked about those books:
Definitely open to books that arenβt fantasy, but Iβm more drawn to an immersive fictional world and a strong main character. Any suggestions??
If it helps, Iβm also a big Bradbury fan and still love rereading Harry Potter from time to time!
Hey! Like many of you, Iβm having a hard time finding a book after reading KKC. Do you guys know of any books that are similar to the Fae section of AWMF? I love the mystery, whimsical alien-ness of the Fae world, and the soft magic system. Any recs?
Edit: Thanks guys for all the great recs! Youβve given me a lot of great books to queue up in my reading list!
Or however you spell it (im listening to the book)
So I havent finished the book yet im at the part where kvothe is leading the two girls he saved from the fake Rue back and he's describing how he left a bottle of water for the guy who had the gut wound so he lives an extra 2 days in agony.
Has like Kvothe immediately forgotten about the Lethani? I thought it was going to help him slow down, think things through and find the right path, the right thing to do.
I understand why he's done what he's done, and I bekive Kote when he says this is a tragedy but dam, im worried about our boy here. He's been thinking a lot of dark shit and while he was training the Ketan and Lethani I thought he was understanding a more righteous path for himself more.
Love the book sorry for spelling errors, ill probably finish it by tomorrow inly got 5 hours left. Sorry if this constitutes low effort.
Yeah I know that this has probably been asked a hundred times before, but the threads I found where all 3/4 years old.
I understand that the third book is probably never going to get released, but that was not confirmed at the time of these posts. I can't seem to find any recent posts and I'd rather not get anything spoiled in case I do decide to carry on with the series.
So I made my own thread. Sorry about that.
To get to the point : Is the book going to make me ask even more questions, leaving most of my current ones unanswered?
Obviously not everything is going to be revealed, but if most of the moments/answers I'm waiting for are going to be saved for the 3rd book, I'd rather keep it the way it is. I've suffered from too many unfinished series.
Thanks.
I'm not joking. Why would it be written to go from tracking bandits to having sex with a sex goddess then gets out and goes to the Adem which is basically land of the free love warriors. Like most of the Adem stuff is just Mr. Main Character having sex with the teacher and the prettiest girl at school. From page 700-1000 it's just this.
Some people seem to think that the Felurian part of the book is essential to realize how much Kvothe has grown as a character. Personally, I think that they are reading way too much into it and that this part of the book is here to make it thicker and that's it. I love supernatural/fantasy elements but man, this one is a stretch for sure!
I could not stop rolling my eyes. Chapters of that was torture.
Last year I bought both The Kingkiller Chronicle books, and the 1st one I managed to finish fast, although I felt like something was missing. I'm having a hard time reading the 2nd one, the pacing is so weird! It took me almost a year to read the first 15% of the book, and then last week I read so much I almost finished it, but now I'm stuck again.
Honestly, it seems like I'm reading a video game script where the character goes into so many side quests, you even forget what the main quest is about. I really like the story, I like Kvothe, but my brain can't keep up with so much side content. When the plot is getting interesting, he finds something else to do and leave me hanging.
Have any of you had similar problems with this series? And if you did, how did you managed to finish reading?
Some of my favorite ones from recent mangas have got to be:
Spoilers for ACT-AGE->!Kei from ACT-Age walking the razor's edge of a mental breakdown after being told by her current play director that she slept with her father on the day her mother died!<
Spoilers for Ascendance of a Bookworm ->!Main from Ascendance of a Bookworm throwing down the best Lelouch quote as she gets ready to Darth Vader a fat priest!<
Spoilers for My Hero Academia ->!Deku has a bunch of them lol but my current favorite is him going absolutely nuts versus Shigaraki in the current arc.!<

Hi!
I was wondering if there's any prevalent theories I may not have thought of, or specific things I may have missed during the two books, specially since I listen to the audio book while doing other stuff. Maybe I missed a hidden hint about something.
Thanks!
I started reading the name of the wind in December and I have finally finished the second book. It was an incredible journey. I love the books so much. I haven't read that many fantasy books but this series will definitely be one of my favourite. I really like the sympathy system as it gives kind of a scientific explanation for basic magic.
I think that the silence in the three part that introduces and ends each book is amazing. The way it is written really makes me feel the silence he is describing, I cannot put proper words on this but these beginnings and endings have something special.
I want to point out that I enjoyed the second book a lot more than the first one (even though I loved NoW) and let me explain why : When I remember the first book, I remember 4 different parts. Kvothe's childhood and his lessons with Ben. The part where he wanders in the forest, reaches Tarbean and stays there for quite some time. Then he heads to the University, and in the last part he goes to Trebon and then fights the Draccus. However, except for Trebon, you can always guess his next destination. After his family is killed, we know he will go to the University when he feels ready, and when he finally arrives, the landscape stays more or less the same (which is absolutely not a bad things but that's just the reason I loved the second book even more when I think about it). In the second book, after a slow start, he leaves the University, which I didn't expect to happen before a long time, and then meets Alvreron, saves him from the poisoning attempt, and is sent to the hunt the bandits. And then the fun begins. From this point until the end of the book, I couldn't stop reading. The next events were always unexpected but the transition was always so smooth. Kvothe somehow reminded me of Ulysse as he was trying to go back to Alvreron but encountered Felurian, the false Ruh, and followed Tempi to Haert. I never knew what to expect.
My favourite character is definitely Auri. There's just so much things about her. In the first book, I remember noticing that there were two repeating descriptions.about her : she often rocks into the edges of her feet, or shift from one feet to another, and her hair make a halo around her, which made me think of her hair like a jellyfish in a way. There's also the day Kvothe and her great other : "-What did you bring me ? -What did you bring me ? A ....that thinks he is ... " This is so special And the fact that she lives in the Underthing

So I recently finished The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and I absolutely loved it! It brought about so many emotions and to me that makes amazing storytelling. Iβm now about 10% into the second book The Wise Manβs Fear and thus far it too is bringing out such strong emotions itβs unbelievable. Minor Spoiler Alert...The part where Auri climbs into Kvotheβs room as he is sobbing due to thinking about his family/mom made me tear up like no book has ever done before. This is truly beautiful and mesmerizing writing and Iβm hoping to finish this second book in the Kingkiller Chronicles soon. Iβm new to fantasy and Iβm quickly starting to fall in love with this genre.
If anyone isn't familiar with this abomination, the artwork on this cover is basically just a painting straight over a figurine of Darth Maul, it's ugly as hell and it doesn't even make sense. The pose, the sword (which is by the way apparently just a copy pasted google image) and the way he holds it.
The entire cover: https://i.imgur.com/Uwynbgw.jpg

I guess (and hope) this wasn't even approved by the author and is just a matter of publisher. I would like to know if he has ever talked about this.
(Apologies for spellings, I've only heard the audio book, so it'll all be phoenetic.)
...and I'm at the point where the townies are having a toast to Shep. When one of the men puts forward the suggestion of raising their glass to the King, Coat shoots that down quick. Made me think something.
Is Ambrose the King? A lot is made that Ambrose is ~13th in line to the throne throughout the first book, and that Kvoth "caused" the war. There is clearly no love lost between Coat and the King, more than the taxed people, and he does express a lot of guilt for it.
So, does anyone else think this could be likely? Am I just picking up something you've known for ~8 years?
Thanks.
I'm re-reading the books for the third time, and in 2020 this section hit just a little different than when I read it before.
They're coming by to talk about their new album The Valley of Kings, recently released on SharpTone Records. Come by and hang out. Ask them some questions. You know how it is.
Why was Elodin so scared when Kvothe asked him about what happens when βhe changes his nameβ and why he then relaxed when Kvothe clarified it as βcalling namesβ? (Chapter 149) Why does Denna know how to braid and read yllish knots? Is Bredon a fae? What are the mysterious items like the warding stones that the university has no explanation for, another example being the metal of the sword caesura? How did the adem know of the chandrian? Why do women make no sense? (Denna)
I finished the Wise Manβs Fear yesterday (the same day as the last episode of GoT, so I kinda donβt know what to do with myself lol)
Anyway, I remember going into the book. A lot of people told me it was a disappointment compared to Name of the Wind, but I have to disagree. I thought WMF was an excellent story, and I personally enjoyed it more than NotW, (even though I enjoyed both immensely!
I will say this and , perhaps this is a question I will pose to everyone. I felt as though there was much less set up at the end of this novel, compared to Name of The Wind. At the end of the first book, Kvothe sets up WMF by stating that he hasnβt even gotten to the meat of the story, then mentions Felurian, and I May be wrong but he also mentions his time away from the university. Does anyone else get the feeling that Patrick Rothfuss did not foreshadow the events of the third book? Is it possible that he did this on purpose to possibly imply that Kvotheβs story is coming to an end?
I understand there were mysteryβs set up about Kvothe not being able to unlock his chest, and whatever Bast is up to. But this all takes place in the present. Will we be leaving Kvotheβs boyhood story and moving to his adventure now?
Iβm having a hard time seeing how this will all end in one more book. SO MANY QUESTIONS! What does everyone else think?
Earlier today I was doing some research on Welsh legend for other reasons (trying to track down the origins of a folk song about a monstrous wild boar) and stumbled upon the literary concept of a triad, a brief discussion (sometimes as a saying, sometimes as the opening for a longer story) of three things that are tied together somehow by an initial description, such as "Three things not easily restrained: the flow of a torrent, the flight of an arrow, and the tongue of a fool," or, more recently, "Three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
Of course I was immediately reminded of "three things every wise man fears." Now I have an idea where the inspiration for that may have come from.
And now that I'm thinking about it, I see a kinship to the "silence of three parts" intro/outro of each book as well.
Denna in the Maer's gardens: I've always preferred moonless nights.
And, as we know, the are three things all wise men fear... A sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.
