The Crowning with Thorns Puns

And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him. (John 19:2)

"Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the praetorium, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe upon him, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on his head, and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him they mocked him, saying, 'Hail, King of the Jews!"' (Matthew 27:27-29).

Fruit of the Mystery: Reign of Christ in our Hearts

As if it wasn't bad enough having Jesus Scourged, the cruel soldiers mocked Him and crowned Him with thorns. They clothed Him in a scarlet robe, the color of royalty. Then they pressed upon Jesus the Crown of Thorns. They placed a reed into His right hand and made fun of His Divine Kingship. Mocking Him all the while with their pretend coronation. The inhumane executioners pranced around Jesus shouting in jest, "Hail King of the Jews" and mockingly they bowed down before Him. They taunted Him and took the reed from His hand and struck His head with it. His own blood blinded Him as it trickled into His Eyes. How those agonizing blows made Jesus suffer compounding the throbbing pain caused by the crown of thorns upon His head. Three out of the four Gospels recount this sorrowful event in the life of Jesus. Jesus being crowned with thorns is one of the sorrowful events in the life of Jesus that it makes your heart sigh that they would treat Jesus as such.

What happened in this mystery:

1. Pilate asks, “Are You a king?” Jesus answers: “I am a King, but My kingdom is not of this world.”
2. In the praetorium, the soldiers place an old purple robe on Jesus in mockery of His claim to be a king.
3. They fashion a crown out of thorns and forcefully press it down upon His head.
4. In His bound hands, they place a reed, like a scepter, in mockery of His kingship.
5. Kneeling before Him in derision, they spit on Him, and cry out: “Hail, King of the Jews!”
6. Taking the reed from His hand they strike Him on the head, driving the thorns more deeply into His scalp.
7. Pilate brings Jesus before the people, hoping His pitiful sight will soften them: “Behold the man!”
8. Their response: “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”
9. Our Blessed Lord submitted to this terrible humiliation to make reparation for our pride.
10. Father, by the merits of this painful humiliation, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Just noticed this in the scene where Maeve and Dolores met. Angela has her crown of thorns, Dolores walking around like God creating a new beginning, and Super Intelligent Maeve refusing to join Dolores group. Dolores tells Maeve to join her group to experience true freedom. Maeve asks why would she do that because Dolores doesn’t actually present true freedom everyone in Dolores group still has to have blind faith in her cause and worship Dolores as their true leader. Maeve says it his her own path and that represents true freedom. She does not expect people to be loyal to her cause but Maeve does have a way of tricking (reprogramming) hosts to follow her cause. She can get people to follow her to but with underhanded tricks. Whereas Dolores asks her people to follow with their heart (faith). Both Dolores and Maeve seem to have a mutual respect for another. Both are extremely powerful. They are not willing to get into each other’s way just yet. This theme was also reaffirmed by last supper scene that followed the Maeve Dolores scene. Dolores has the power to resurrect all those soldiers at the table as new loyal disciples.
