But who could be your ideal choice to play the role (be it from any era)?
Since I've read the novel like about 2 times, I'm convinced that prime Rekha Ganesan would've been the perfect one to don the role. Let's take a look at Nandhini's characteristics:-
- Unatainable gorgeous woman
- Revenge driven
- Lustful voice
- Lecherous, yet powerful eyes
- Queen of manipulation
- Decision maker
Meanwhile a few days back, I watched this Hindi film called, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Rekha ji has played a negative shade character. I was stunned by how she carried the role. Then I watched some of her films (Kollywood did a mistake by not introducing her in Tamil territory knowing that she's well spoken in Tamil). She definitely ticks all Nandhini traits (judging on the roles she has played).
And these are my other choices:-
- Ramya Krishnan (Padayappa)
- Jayaprada (Those eyes)
- Maadhavi (not so a popular choice)
- Andrea (Vada Chennai)
- Urmilah (If Nandhini's from North)
The ponniyin Selvan team is planning to conduct two audio launch events for Part I of the movie - one inside India and the other one abroad, in order to take the glory of Tamil Kings on a global level. So far, everything is in planning stage and an official confirmation is expected from the team very soon!

Rajamouli recently said he wanted to make a TV show of Ponniyin Selvan but stopped once he found out how Mani Ratnam was making a movie of it.
Who do you personally believe could execute Ponniyin Selvan better? Rajamouli already has a few historic period drama movies in his kitty that have been landmark films in terms of box office collections & VFX; while Mani is newly venturing into such a grand scale of movie making. Do you think he will be able to pull it off?
Also, take into consideration that Ponniyin Selvan is a very nuanced & lengthy book with so many sub plots and stories that possibly couldn't fit in a 2 part movie like Mani Ratnam is making. It could be better represented in a TV series sort of venture. But, Mani has established himself as a brilliant director and I'm looking forward to his version of Ponniyin Selvan.
I have a bad feeling about it.
I heard that Vanathi Publications is the original publisher of the book. So, I would like to buy all the 5 books online.

When I first saw the announcement that Mani Ratnam will be making a film adaptation of one of my favourite books I was excited, but when I started thinking about a bit more, I became skeptical.
A few things that bother me:
- 2-Part Adaptation - This is the first thing that makes me think the film might not reflect the book as honestly as it should. There are 5 volumes totaling more than 2000 pages which means there are definitely going to be a number of chapters/events that are cut out. While this may not be too bad and might actually end up being alright, it has more reasons to go wrong than right.
What parts of the book do you think will get cut out? - Casting and Important Characters - Although there are speculations about the actors (and a few potential confirmations) the casting of the movie is going to drive the people in charge mad because there are numerous important characters in the book and all of them have (almost-complete) character arcs that are crucial to the story. This means that the actors cast in various roles need to completely embody the character and make themselves a force to be reckoned with. However, there are only so many actors who have the acting prowess to pull of something of this magnitude (and even fewer who might actually suit the role).
What do you think the sacrifices made for characters will be? - Story Structure - Something I loved about the book was just how the story was structured and how we follow almost every single character as a main character, and how the story connects different branches together every so often. While this may be near impossible to achieve in a movie, it is something that's important to the story and must hence be followed.
How do you think this will be implemented in the movie? - World Building - Lyca producing it means there is definitely an enormous amount just for CGI, and VFX but will it be good enough?
Other than Enthiran, and 2.0 Tamil cinema has a very bad track record for CGI in films. The landmarks, cities, areas etc., play as much a role in the story as the characters in it and if they do not look like they're supposed to, we're going to be watching a great book being butchered on screen.
One thing that gives me hope that the movie will be good is because Mani Ratnam is at the helm. I trust him in the fact that he won't tackle this project unless he knows for sure that he can do it justice.
