Paulet affair Puns

I've been doing a project for my US history class about US imperialism in Hawaii. This led to me learning about the Paulet Affair, which was a diplomatic incident in 1843 between the British and the Americans over a rouge admiral taking the independent kingdom of Hawaii for the UK without permission. This fluke almost caused a war between the US and UK and it would be interesting to see similar things situations caused by strategic interests overlapping and crises.

On the evening of Dec. 15, 1873, Halpin, an attractive 38-year-old sales clerk working at a department store in Buffalo, New York, was on her way to a friend's birthday party when she ran into Cleveland strolling down Swan Street. Cleveland was a chunky 37-year-old bachelor whose six-foot frame projected a figure of might and vitality. He had been courting Halpin for several months and they exchanged greetings. Cleveland invited her to dinner at the Ocean Dining Hall & Oyster House. He was pretty "persistent" about it, Halpin would later recall.

Their meal together was a pleasant one. Cleveland escorted Halpin back to her room at a downtown boarding house. What happened next, according to Halpin's affidavit, would in another era be classified as date rape. Cleveland sexually assaulted her "by use of force and violence and without my consent," Halpin reported, adding that when she threatened to notify the authorities, Cleveland "told me he was determined to ruin me if it cost him $10,000, if he was hanged by the neck for it. I then and there told him that I never wanted to see him again [and] commanded him to leave my room, which he did."

Six weeks later, Maria became aware that she was pregnant.

DOMESTIC POLICY

Economics

The 1880s had two main economic policies that many wanted to implement: the Gold Standard and Free silver. Cleveland was a Democrat who supported the Gold Standard and implemented it. Cleveland saw monetary policy as both an economic and moral issue; he thought that adherence to the gold standard would ensure a stable currency, and also felt that those who had extended loans should not be penalized by rising inflation. He was a strong Fiscal Conservative who strongly opposed tariffs; despite his opposition to them, he failed to lower them. He did however lower the national debt by 13.14%, in his first term.

In his second term, he oversaw a mass economic depression that many blamed Benjamin Harrison for. The general reception was that the recession was caused by high tariffs and the free silver policy put forward by Benjamin Harrison. Cleveland, however, was seen as a poor reactionary figure to the panic. He mostly stayed out of the economy, which didn't help much as unemployment rates were still high. He convinced a group led by financier J. P. Morg

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

The presidency of William Henry Harrison began on March 4th, 1841, when William Henry Harrison was inaugurated as President of the United States, and ended on March 4th, 1845, when his successor Daniel Webster took office. Harrison swiftly defeated 8th president Martin van Buren in the election of 1840, promising to be a man of the people. Harrison did not run in 1844, instead endorsing Secretary of State Daniel Webster.

As soon as day one, the Harrison Administration was faced with several issues such as the impounding Second Seminole War and Panic of 1837. Harrison promised to implement the American system as a way to slowly end the ongoing recession. He oversaw the repeal of the Independent Treasury, a leftover from the Buren Administration, while also raising tariffs and instituting a national bank. Harrison supported the recently ended Indian Removal, however oversaw a conclusion to the Second Seminole War after battles continued in 1843. Meanwhile, the Crittenden Affair ensued and gave a negative image for the Harrison Administration.

In foreign affairs, Harrison concluded an end to a border dispute between the U.S.A and the United Kingdom with the purchase of New Brunswick, rapid trade between the two nations and fishing rights for British Immigrants. Harrison also enforced the Monroe Doctrine in the Hawaiian Islands, hoping to prevent any European colonization of Hawaii. Besides this, he rejected the annexation of Texas, increased spending for the military and navy and admitted Florida into the Union.
