So, recently, a creationist just kept repeating "orphans genes" at me: an orphan gene is a gene that exists only within a narrow subfamily, which strongly implied when it arose. Humans have some ~1000 - 2000 orphan genes compared to our closest ape relatives, which is not abnormal: most species have approximately 10 - 30% of their genes being "taxonomically restricted".
The methods they arise from are not unknown: de novo arise; gene duplication and rapid mutation; and horizontal gene transfer. None of these can be ruled out, though some are more common than others. What I note from creationists is that none of them can explain why orphan genes are a problem, but simply point to the pile and say "evolution bad", as if the number of genes and the timeline given are going to trip us up.
...but then I realized something: if the Flood happened 4000 years ago, where did these genes come from? It has been less than 1000 generations since the Flood, for most organisms, so there is absolutely no fucking way these genes should have evolved in that time, if it was going to be a problem on the 6-12 million year timeline that human evolution required. Unlike human or animal evolution, they have a much smaller population and a much shorter timeline: so there is no way that the taxonomically restricted genes could exist if all the horse species, for example, are descended from the handful of horses on the ark.
So, creationists: if the orphan gene argument is so good, how does it not exclude the Flood from occurring?
I like this show, but I think the ownership of gene patents makes zero difference to the clones' day to day lives.
No court, no court of public opinion is going to let DYAD own the clones.
What am I missing?

Catherine is voiced by Han, Keiko. She had an early role as Lalah Sune in MSG, but started working even earlier in 1974 in Barbapapa. Some of her other roles are: Saori Kido from Saint Seiya, Luna from Sailor Moon, as well as Andromeda, from The Queen of a Thousand Years.
Yasuhiko is also voiced by an old hand, Yuu, Mizushima. He stared in several TV series during the late 1970 and 1980s, the most well-known of which is probably Voltron, where he voices Isamu Kurogane. He is also Ryou Asuka from Devilman, Neidhardt Mรผller from LotGH, and Reed Clow from Tsubasa Chronicle.

Iโve just come here to ask a question I donโt have the answer to. I believe in evolution, of course, but Iโm truly confused about Orphan genes. May anyone be able to provide an explanation/answer?
...getting more and more of a Helena vibe from Yelena? Especially during her scene at Kate's house with the mac and cheese, I kept expecting her to say "sestra". I'm starting to wonder if it's a bit of an intentional nod to Tatiana Maslany from Florence Pugh (who's really hilarious btw, just as she was in BW).
5 seasons was a pretty good length, but a spin-off show would have been nice. Or even now that time has passed, I feel like they could just bring it back. There's been nothing like it since. It was such an amazing platform and showcase of one actors talents, but even beyond that the show had such a great blend of genres that kept it interesting. It was funny, it was dark, it was emotional, it was just a lot of fun.
I don't know if I should give John Fawcett all the credit, but he made my favorite movie as a teen - Ginger Snaps. So, the fact he also years later made my favorite television show is quite the coincidence. So, if not Orphan Black, then maybe a new show. Obviously, hopefully starring Tatiana.
