I'm not sure how many people want to talk or ask questions but every year on March 7th I stop by to say hi!
My name is Stephen Klepner and I am a director of 7th Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps. We are a part of Inspire Arts, a youth performing arts program based out of Boston MA. I am also a college band director and would love to talk with you about the state of drum corps, marching arts, your favorite food, anything! I will answer as best as I can!
(Shameless plug)
7th Regiment announced our show concept today, here's the poster. https://imgur.com/a/2hseb. We do have a few limited spots open in brass (baritone, mellophone) and in our color guard. We will be marching our largest drum corps to date this summer!
If you want to get paid to work three hours tops and sit on a beach for the rest of the day like I did last summer, message me about a cruise contract.
Personally for me, Bluecoats: To Search For America and Cavies: Machine
Absolute Bangers

My friend recently asked me this question, and I figured it would be a great topic of discussion for everyone. Granted, this does not take into account positive/negative change on the activity - this is merely overall change during the entire history of Drum Corps International. That being said, I think the big factor is the why when stating your opinions. Anyone can pick 5 corps off the top of their head, but if you have thorough reasoning why, then everyone can begin to see things from different perspectives, igniting more discussion.
What is Drum Corps? It is like marching band with people aged up to 21 in the summer and you travel around the country to perform shows in stadiums to compete against other corps. Thatβs the oversimplified version at least.
DCI is the company that hosts all these shows and are in charge of the rules corps have to follow in order to compete and whatnot.
Lately, A couple corps had to be shut down due to abuse of its members. In the last year or so, many former members of these corps came forward talking about the unethical conditions they had to live in while on the road
Iβm not sure about naming things so Iβll keep this anonymous. βCorps Aβ made a post online about how theyβre upset that βCorps Bβ and βCorps Cβ had to shut down due to violation of DCI rules. They offered decreased tuition for those former members of B C to march with A, and was overall just offering a home for those who want to march but couldnβt anymore with B or C. DCI was having none of this, and put a suspension on Corps A from participating in any DCI activities
This has people fuming. It just doesnβt make sense, and itβs very shady of DCI to shut down a corps that stood up and spoke their mind. DCI has been criticized even before this incident for not caring about its memberβs safety and whatnot, and the suspension of Corps A just makes everyone hate DCI even more.
I went to the DCI show in West Chester and it has influenced me to want to join DCI. The only problem is that I play Tenor and Bari Sax and need to learn a new instrument (most likely baritone horn/Euphonium). Right now I'm going into my Junior year of high school which will be my 3rd year of marching band which means that I know how to march. If any of you on here have been in Drum Corps before, do you have any advice for me when it comes to learning a new instrument or auditioning/picking a corps?
Now we can finally just march while playing our band instruments in peace
Include all airfare, camp fees, gas costs or whatever. I'm serious curious and guestimate.
My one year at Boston cost like $8k.
My friends convinced me to go last year and I havenβt regretted it one bit, so I was wondering how you all got into dci
It's at UA Breckenridge Stadium 12

I believe that the drum corps activity, as a whole, is it a dangerous crossroads. Between disappearing into irrelevance and a seemingly unhealthy push for perfection, the entire drum and bugle corps activity in my opinion is like a house of cards: one more move and the whole thing can crumble.
Today's news of two longtime member corps of DCA, Minnesota Brass and the Kilties, both going inactive is devastating. The Govenaires had to drop back to Class A in 2017. The Rocketeers, who were petitioning for DCA Class A this year, have gone inactive. Alliance, another DCA corps, went inactive in 2017. Chops, Inc. has been on and off the field for several years. Shenandoah Sound left DCA to join SoundSport as Sonus Brass Theater. The Southern Knights joined DCA in 2017 and are holding their own for now. Fusion Core, which featured an almost all local membership from the Lake Hopatcong region, is now recruiting nationwide. In DCI, there were zero new corps for evaluation this year, after seven applied last year, with almost all being turned down except a select few.
Why is that?
Back in the mid and late 2000s, and continuing until the early 2010s, both DCI and DCA were plagued with a string of corps that folded or went inactive: Dutch Boy, Americanos, Music City Legend, East Coast Jazz, High Country Brass, Marion Glory Cadets, Velvet Knights, Capitol Regiment, Teal Sound, Southwind, and the list goes on. The majority of these corps folded due to a lack of money. They simply couldn't keep up with the top corps with the rising costs of touring and in the case of DCA, the costs of getting to Finals. Today, we have begun seeing another decline in the number of active corps after several years of growth in both circuits. Today's decline is not about money.
Today's decline is about people. Which people? Many different groups: corps staff, band directors, parents, alumni, and current and prospective members. The corps who have gone inactive the past 3 years have done so only because of a lack of people. This isn't an issue of oversaturation of the market either, because Census data shows a record number of young adults in this country, and there are a record low number of drum corps in comparison. Corps are folding because of a lack of interest, especially among brass players.
Why is there a lack of interest? It's not very simple to answer, but there are a few key reasons. First is cost. DCA is much less expensive to join than DCI, but the benefit
