So, as I was reading about various philosophies that address the idea that there is no meaning in the universe, I noticed that there was a bit of parallel between each of them to the endings of Dark Souls 3. It would make sense if they were related as a main theme in the game is figuring out what to do when faced with the impeding Abyss. It may be a bit of a stretch, but here's how I think each ending represents a different philosophy on how to deal with the nothingness that awaits if the First Flame fades.

The “Linking the Flame” ending represents the idea of Monotheistic Existentialism. In this philosophy, it is believed that it is God which gives meaning to an otherwise meaningless universe. Though the Dark Souls universe doesn’t have the idea of God in the traditional sense, it does have the First Flame. Giving your Ashen One to the flame represents having faith that this entity you have chosen to believe in will be able to fend off the Abyss for you. No additional effort is needed for this ending compared to the others, because all that is needed here is your faith. The fact that the flame is noticeably smaller than in the original Dark Souls shouldn’t matter. Just as the might of God should not have to be seen to be believed, the First Flame should not have to burst into a flurry of fire in order for you to trust that your sacrifice was worth it.

The “Usurpation of Fire” ending represents the idea of Atheistic Existentialism. While the previous existentialist ending had the fire existing as an external entity, this ending has the Ashen One take the fire into themself. This is because in Atheistic Existentialism, there is the belief that in a meaningless universe, it is up to the individual to create meaning from within. The fact that the Usurpation ending has the most involved questline seems to represent the idea of working to create and fulfill this sense of self-determined purpose. Here the fire, and thus the continued existence of meaning in the universe, is sustained only by the Ashen One’s own force of will and the future they have forged for themself.

The “Unkindled” ending explores Nihilism. Unlike the existentialist ideas, there is no creation of meaning in Nihilism and thus the flame does fade in the end. In Nihilist belief, there is no meaning in anything one does, and therefore it is then acceptable to do anything as nothing matters. There is no prompt to kill the Firekeeper, nothing that suggests it is even possible. Here, the Ashen O

That was the punchline.

Let me preface this by saying that I know Smash Ultimate could never exist in a vacuum. Ultimate is the direct result of Sakurai and his team accumulating power and connections to the tune of over two decades. Additionally, Smash itself has increasingly become a desirable advertising space, somewhere where you want your character to be because hey, it's free advertising. Companies know that Sakurai will treat their characters well.

That said, I find Smash Ultimate to be completely insane when it comes to the sheer amount of content it contains, and what that content is "worth".

I actually hate value/cost analogies, but it seems to me like 60 dollars would be worth any single one of the major features that Ultimate will give you. Less than a dollar per character, almost fifty cents per stage, and I think about eight cents per song? All of those would add up to sixty bucks by themselves. It's ridiculous.

I'm very grateful that Sakurai, despite not officially being "with Nintendo" anymore, still holds those "old" philosophies about what you should get when you buy a game. Sakurai has a plan, and he's stuck to it. Only after then, he's said, does he consider DLC.

In a bleaker universe, I think something like Dark Samus could have been a Gamestop preorder bonus. A premium skin that doesn't "technically" affect the character, but is obviously desirable and seeks to drive up purchases. In a yet more malevolent universe, you might unlock characters or colors for them via a gacha gambling system with odds stacked against more popular characters. You'd be held back from actually engaging in this system by a prohibitively long credit-earning grind, one which (of course) real money would alleviate.

Nintendo is often accused of not being "with the times", however I think things have finally turned around to the point that that's an unambiguously good thing. We don't have digital content planned and then held back to drive up the price of a Special Edition. Smash's special edition just has more hardware bundled with it. We don't have on-disk DLC (and if we do, that will quickly be revealed by hackers). We don't have a planned season pass that will get you little but an early confirmation of a content project plan.

Sakurai's just making the freakin' game. When it's done, you can buy it. And if people want more after that, maybe he'll see what he can do.

I have been vegetarian for almost 2 years. I turn 19 this weekend. My older brother is a chef and offered to make my birthday meal. I’ve usually helped my mom make my birthday meal in the past, but I asked my brother if he had anything in mind to make or if he wanted me to pick something for him to make.

He said he wanted to make a lasagna, which is one of his specialities. I asked him what he would use to make it vegetarian. He said he wouldn’t, he would make his classic meat lasagna. I reminded him I didn’t eat meat and he said yeah he was going to make me a separate dish of pasta and marinara sauce. So he basically wanted to make dinner for everyone else on my birthday and just throw something else together for me.

I eat separate meals from my family because of my diet 95% of the time. I shouldn’t have to on my birthday, in my opinion. I told him thanks but no thanks and that I saw his offer to “make my birthday dinner.” As a slap in the face. He got all huffy and said I never appreciated him trying to do something nice. My mom agrees with me but told me I should’ve been nicer in turning him down and just said “mom and I have it covered.”

AITA? I really don’t understand how making a big elaborate birthday meal the birthday person can’t even eat is a nice gesture.

I’ve been reading through as many of these comments as I can. Honestly now that I have had time to calm down I think everyone saying NTA or ESH but I could have handled it better is correct. I was just absolutely floored and upset in the moment because I felt like my brother was trying to exclude me from my own birthday. He hardly makes lasagna because he works so much so Idek maybe he thought this was a good opportunity even though obviously it was not.

Iwant to get better at asserting myself in 2020 (it’s my new year’s resolution) but I don’t need to be unkind about it. Maybe other people don’t agree but if I was going to offer to make someone dinner for their birthday, I would want to make their favourite meal. It’s why my mom and I go out for dinner on her birthday - her favourite meal is fish and chips which I don’t feel comfortable making myself as a vegetarian but I can damn well each fries and salad while she gets her favourite dinner on her birthday.

I still don’t know what we’re doing for dinner on Sunday when we celebrate or if there’ll even be one at this point, but I appreciate the input regardless. “No” is a complete sentence. I should have stopped there.

Boy, was my face red!

I'm in the same boat.

After recently coming to accept who I am, I have noted that there are four main phases that I went through, and based on the experiences that I see on subs like this, many others go through a similar process.

Not that these are not absolute, I am not a professional, and you are by no means invalid if this doesn't resonate with you.

1. Denial: You were cis. You found something trans related that resonated with you, and you can't just shake those thoughts. Maybe you decide to browse r/egg_irl, but definitely not because you're trans.
2. The Honeymoon Phase: So maybe you might just be trans. You analyze your past and find that it makes just a little bit of sense, and OH MY HOW COULD I BE SO DENSE AS TO NOT SEE THE SIGNS BEFORE??? You begin to entertain proper fantasies of being your desired gender and absolutely love it.
3. Doubt: Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and the honeymoon phase doesn't last very long. You start to question if you are really trans. Maybe your dysphoria/euphoria wanes. Maybe you look to the stories of others for support and confidence. Some will resonate and encourage you, but inevitably, some will differ and you will be discouraged. "I didn't suffer nearly as much as they did." "I didn't always know." "I could live without being trans." You plague your mind with doubting thoughts. Maybe you find some stories that ended poorly. People judged for coming out. Those who suffered side effects after hormones or surgery. And sadly, many who ended up taking their own lives. You say to yourself, "I wish I was [identified gender], but I'm somewhat decent at being [assigned gender]. I'm worried to ruin what I have, and I don't really want to be trans, just [identified gender]."
4. Acceptance: This is the goal state every questioning trans person wishes they could be in. You have no doubts. You are confident in your identity. You take whatever steps you want to reach your desired gender, with no fear of repercussions.

Now here's the important thing to note: I lied. Nobody is in stage 4. There is a spectrum from 3 to 4 which most trans people fall into. You might gradually move from 3 to 4, but you also might move backwards. It's a crazy and scary place to be.

So if everyone is on this spectrum, how can anyone be confident in their identity? The closer to 4 you are, the easier it gets, but ultimately, you just have to put on a brave face and take a confident leap of faith with your identity. But here

Dec 19th vs today

Hello everyone, as the title says. I’ve lost so much weight that my phone no longer opens to the facial analysis and I only noticed today that this was happening when I went to my AMC app to buy movie tickets the app just wouldn’t recognize my face at all. I thought it was a problem with my phone. But, 6 months ago I was around 197 pounds, now I’m down to 165 pounds. And looking at my before and now photos, I can see why my iPhone would say I’m not who I say I am.

I feel much more confident and better looking now and seeing my face for the first time and comparing it to six months ago. The change is outstanding to me.

What I did for the last five months was usually 2-3 hours of weightlifting everyday. However, I switched it up two months ago and added 1 hour of cardio on a treadmill on 10 inch incline at 4 mph. This made me pour with sweat more than any other exercise I’ve done. Plus, it’s easy and fun. So basically 1 hour cardio, 1-2 hour weightlifting.

After I finished cardio I would do 1-2 hours of weightlifting. But these would be basic weightlifting exercises like bench press, barbell press etc. basically what Arnold said in an interview in the 80s about basic exercises being some of the most important things you could do. I just stuck with it.

I could add body pics, but I feel it’ll take away from the title of the post.

My iPhone no longer recognizes my face because of the amount of weight I’ve lost. I feel great!

Dec 19th vs today

Edit: just to answer a few questions, I didn’t really change anything in my diet. I just fasted and gave myself a 6 hour window to eat usually sometimes 4 hour window. I was still usually eating what I wanted but kept under the 2k calorie mark. I was still eating Raising Cain’s and In N Out every other day, I love fast food. Nowadays I don’t eat much fast food, I really don’t each that much at all. The fasting has pretty much stopped my appetite and I really only eat if I have to or need to. My urges to reach for bad food have mostly gone away. I don’t know what to say. I’d also sometimes workout 5-6 times a week doing the 2-3 hour workout. So in total I’d work out between 10-18 hours total a week. Kind of like a part time job haha. But realistically, I didn’t notice these changes happening in my body until after I started resting more and adding cardio into my workout. Doing both weightlifting and cardio has done wond
