Written about the conflict in Northern Ireland, the lyrics contain a racial slur used to describe Irish Catholics.
Just reading about this tune again as it's just in the news...and just thought I'd share this comment that just read
He wrote this song after having seen so many young men recruited "army grunts" and knowing how many of them die. they are usually recruited because they honestly don't have any other prospects - "Called careers information - have you got yourself an occupation?" It's basically the job for people who don't have a job, and so many of them are cannon fodder and die, particularly the "grunts" (infantry soldiers). but the army chants the mantra "it's a professional career", but of course we all know that it IS dangerous and for most, it's not a career. Army-time is not normally for life, hence why there are so many unemployed, depressed, ex-army veterans out there. BUT, to be honest, the army pretty much is the best prospect for someone with no prospects....

I feel like the reason there have been so few official gecs songs is because of their careful second release. Their first tour was supposed to start right when the pandemic happened and the halt on the entire performance arts industry stunted their popularity. Remind you these are career song writers and this is how they make their living.
I say Laura and Dylan just do what ever you feel! You guys have such a distinct sound and are doing something NO ONE ELSE in the world is doing. Just get jiggy with it, and I promise all of us fans will love whatever you put out!

For sheer depth and breadth of lyricism, humor and cleverness, allusiveness and power of language, and overall creative fecundity, i think he’s one of the few guys who gives Dylan a run for his money. Obviously he’s no Bob, but I think he has a similar love for words.
