[book review] [not really] David Buss,

Did I hear someone ask for a book review? No? OK good, because I didn't read it yet, but David Buss has a new book out: When Men Behave Badly: The Hidden Roots of Sexual Deception, Harassment, and Assault](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08F51JK55/)

I haven't read it yet, but Rob Henderson did. A couple of interesting excerpts:

>Why do people cheat on their romantic partners? For men, it appears that the main reason they stray is the desire for sexual variety. In fact, men who cheat are just as happy in their marriages as men who are faithful. In contrast, women who stray are often unhappy. Women who have affairs often want to detach themselves from relationships in which they are unsatisfied and seek a better partner. In fact, only 30 percent of men report falling in love with their affair partners, while for women it is 79 percent.

This tracks with my informal experience pretty well, and anecdotally I'd say the discussions here reflect it too.

>Intriguingly, people tend to hold double standards about what counts as cheating. For example, 41 percent of men report that oral contact with the genitals of someone other than their partner counts as β€œsex.” But what if their partner had oral contact with someone else’s genitals? For this question, 65 percent of men said that would count as sex.

HOLY SHIT SCIENCE NEWS FLASH: cheaters have double standards! "Dr Buss, the Nobel committee is calling on line 2."

>What about for women? 36 percent of women said if they had oral contact with the genitals of someone other than their partner, that would count as sex. But 62 percent said if their partner had oral contact with someone else, that would count as sex.

I'd be realllllly interested to see if these numbers change when the survey respondents are, or are not, getting oral regularly from their partner. Betcha 100% of both sexes would say "if they'll do it for a stranger but not for me it's totally cheating."

>It seems people believe they can engage in oral sex and it would be just fine. In contrast, they would view it as a betrayal if their partners engaged in the same behavior.

All y'all who are eating that unauthorized ass, know that Dr Buss has you in his sights.

Maybe I'll pick this up at the library. I suspect reading it on the sofa would spark some interesting conversations around the ol'

As I watch the 2010 Finals post game celebration, I see Stewart Scott, the czar himself, David stern, Jerry buss and Kobe. All have passed away since this re-airing. RIP

Prettycrazy that so many people died since only 2010. It's not fair that such nice and good people died so soon, many of them integral to the NBAs success. It was surreal seeing them on stage together, almost like God was mocking us. Almost puts things in perspective, how unbelievably short life is and how precious it is. And how unfair it is.

David Buss believes in true love

David Buss is probably the most respected researcher of evolutionary psychology. His work is frequently cited by RP believers. Nevertheless, he claims to believe in true love.

The Edge asked "What do you believe is true even though you cannot prove it?"

David Buss answered:

"True love.

I’ve spent two decades of my professional life studying human mating. In that time, I’ve documented phenomena ranging from what men and women desire in a mate to the most diabolical forms of sexual treachery. I’ve discovered the astonishingly creative ways in which men and women deceive and manipulate each other. I’ve studied mate poachers, obsessed stalkers, sexual predators, and spouse murderers. But throughout this exploration of the dark dimensions of human mating, I’ve remained unwavering in my belief in true love.

While love is common, true love is rare, and I believe that few people are fortunate enough to experience it. The roads of regular love are well traveled and their markers are well understood by many – the mesmerizing attraction, the ideational obsession, the sexual afterglow, profound self-sacrifice, and the desire to combine DNA. But true love takes its own course through uncharted territory. It knows no fences, has no barriers or boundaries. It’s difficult to define, eludes modern measurement, and seems scientifically wooly. But I know true love exists. I just can’t prove it."
