Civil action against person who held 2 year old son hostage (MO)

In February a the 40 year old meth head son of our next door neighbor broke into our house broke into our house and barricaded himself in our 2 year old's room with our son inside. Our 5 and 7 year olds were in the bedroom next door and heard everything until we got them out of the house. To get into our house he broke a garage window, climbed in and the kicked in the door from the garage to the kitchen (just a handle lock and no deadbolt). Once he was in our sons room he piled our sons furniture (dresser, chair, etc) in front of the door to prevent us from getting in. At one point he told us he was holding my son so no one can shoot him but we are all going to die. Eventually police showed up and he tried to escape by jumping out of my son's window. He was then tackled and arrested in a neighbor's yard. He was charged with burglary and 1st degree kidnapping.

Unfortunately the criminal case is not going well. He is likely going to be found not guilty by reason of mental defect even though that mental defect is a result of him being a meth head. We have no power, no say and have never had a chance to share our side. We didnt even get the opportunity to give an impact statement. His attorney waived the bail hearing so he could be tranfered to a hospital for the psych eval.

This guy is broke but his parents have money. Does it make sense to go after him civilly? -All of our family is now in therapy (not cheap) -We had to move. It was too hard living next to his parents and being surrounded by triggers. I had to stop having panic attacks every time I tried to open my son's bedroom door. -We also had to take off time from work to set up orders of protection and deal with other court processes. I dont really want money. I want him to have to sit and listen to me explain in detail all the pain and suffering he has caused. He and his parents need to hear it. They have perpetually enabled this piece of walking human garage.
