Cirque du Freak Puns

I feel like most horror fans who got into horror at an early age has probably read these books at some point. Idk how popular they are nowadays though. The gist of the story is there’s 2 teens who are best friends, there’s a mystical freak show that arrives in town, one of them wants to be a vampire and the other doesn’t, but is turned into one anyway. The series details the customs and society of vampires through the eyes of said kid. The friends become mortal enemies. Then weird shit happens.

This franchise could be solid gold for a big studio, there’s tons of rich mythology and the whole world is believable. The freak show characters are all people you get really attached to, and you really want the main character to achieve greatness. There’s so much you could do with this series.

Also I’m ignoring the film adaptation from the late 2000’s, that thing took a shit all over the source material

I read this series from the juvenile section of the library (probably would be described as middle grade now) in the late 90s. The overarching theme was a circus side show, I think each book focused on a different character? The one I remember best was about a werewolf/wolf boy possibly from the perspective of a girl who befriended him or had a crush on him. The wolf boy was lonely and alienated from society and may have disappeared at the end.

The only thing I've ever been able to turn up is the Cirque du Freak books by Darren Shan but they were published too late and the description doesn't sound right to me. The cover style was also very different.

Man, when I was barely getting into middle school, I'd always go to the library and read Cirque Du Freak over Harry Potter books. Something about it made me glue to my seat and read it for hours on end after school or during the weekend when I went to the library. I highly recommend if you like vampire stories, I'd HIGHLY recommend reading it even though it's over 20 years old. I just randomly was googling it and brought so many teenage memories.

I was always surprised nobody took the chance to read it, I always tried to get my friends to read it, but they decided to always read Harry Potter. Hope you guys give it a chance!

In middle school the library had all of the graphic novels so I read them all, and looking back on it it seems like a fever dream. No part of me will ever accept the fact that there was a Cirque Du Freak movie with John C Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Josh Hutcherson, and Salma Hayek in it

As a kid, I read a lot. I mean about a book or two a week, over 500 pgs. I had a lot of time, now that time as I progress in age lingers no more. Though, if your looking for a read that is entertaining, easy, and unique, Darren Shan's Cirque du Freak is probably for you. From the first major moment in the first book to the last few scenes in the twelfth, it all connects in a very nice twist and neat bow. There being a large central conflict alongside battles of destiny, good and evil, and morales. From the journey where it begins it starts simple enough, then becomes a seemingly global scale. I'm writing this in my phone and my hands are not the best for typing but if you want to get back into reading and are looking for a good read, this is a very good recommendation.

I started a new multi-book story last month, called the Archibald Lox series. I started thinking about it some time yesterday, so this might be a bit jumbled up.

In the Cirque Du Freak, and it's prequel series, we're introduced to a lot of different entities. Not only this, but later on in Cirque Du Freak, it's revealed that there are a lot of Higher Powers, beyond even Desmond himself. So, I got to thinking about the magic in Cirque and everything, how it seems to follow the Demonata in the similar case of being a Low Magic System (a system without that many rules).

After thinking a bit more on it, I wanted to propose the question,

Could Cirque Du Freak be an unofficial sequel to the Demonata?

Books that are out of the ordinary and explore an alternate universe/dimension.

It's been years since I've read these but I adored them when I was around middle school age. They're essentially the Harry Potter of horror and I never hear people talk about them.

The basic premise is this kid gets wrapped up in the world of vampires after visiting an illegal freak show. It starts out kind of small-scale dealing with his turn, coping, the titular circus, and eventually gets into this war between the two different races of vampires.

I really loved all the characters and lore. It's far from just a vampire story and even the vampire stuff isn't really traditional. But I don't want to spoil all the unique details that made the series so much fun back then. If you're looking for a series to get your kids into horror, this is likely the one. There's a ton of them including a prequel series and graphic novel adaptations.

Avoid the movie like the plague though. It was an abomination.

Started reading the manga online, has anyone else read it? What do you think of it?

I’ve just recently found out they adapted the series to a manga format and am very interested in reading however it unfortunately seem like they are out of print and I’m not able to find a digital reader version. Most of the physical copies I’ve found on amazon are insanely priced up to over 200$ for a single volume. So I’m curious if any one has a good way to get there hands on them.

That was the most trippiest ending at 5 in the morning with no sleep. Totally worth it. I thought it was so tacky how the main character was named after the author, but he PLANNED that shit. WHAT I first started the series in middle school but stopped part way through. I picked it up again years later to see if it still held up and it did!

This was the last series I really got into so I wanted to know if theres anything I might like based on that? I want to get into reading more amd definitely want to do more fantasy, as that doesnt have much in tv/shows. What I liked about this series was the crazy characters, the fact that people can die, and the story grabbed me in the beginning...I also liked the creatures. I did not like the ending very much. Let me know if this post is too brief or too long...

So, I was thinking earlier, in the second book a main plot line is that Darren doesn't want to drink human blood, which is essentially the reason for Sams death. However, in the first book, the whole reason he agrees to faking his own death and leaving his home is because he can't stop himself drinking blood. He drinks from his friend during a soccer match, then nearly drinks from Annie. It doesn't really make sense to me that he can suddenly make a conscious choice to not drink blood, especially as he is given so many opportunities while hunting with Larten. I'm just wondering if he could control it like that, then why didn't he just stay home in the first book after being turned?
