Is there a list of common English proper name to Chinese character transcriptions?

Ex. Sarah -> 沙拉 Shala, or Rose -> η½—ζ–― Luosi

I've been tasked with coming up with English names for several Chinese names and am having trouble with those that don't have English names starting with a similar sound, such as Chinese names starting with Yu.

Was hoping to get some inspiration on what English sounds Chinese people would feel sound similar to "yu", and so on.

Thanks in advance!

Baxter Middle Chinese Readings

Hey guys,

Do you guys have or know of any online sources to learn how to read Baxter's notation for MC? Some of his stuff is on Google Books, but it requires an advanced background in linguistics. Is there a source that explains these readings "for dummies"?

Thanks

Since I couldn't find a complete transcription of "Skating" by Vince Guaraldi, I decided to transcribe the middle solo myself. Can someone please double check it for accuracy?

I did my best, but it took a lot of time and effort to transcribe the solo. Below is a link to the transcription. The solo starts on measure 62 and ends on measure 98. Here is a link to a recording of that particular section.

I think that I have the notes either completely correct, or very nearly correct. My issue is that it's hard to tell how Guaraldi is playing the notes in accordance with the time signature. If there are problems with the transcription, that's where they'll be. I had to slow a few parts down with the youtube player to 0.5x speed, and that helped quite a bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Link to my transcription.

Any accessible (Middle) Egyptian poetry transcriptions?

I'm looking for examples of Egyptian poetry in the original. My ideal would be love poetry with hieroglyphs and a transliteration, but I'd be keen on any poetry and any of hieroglyphs, hieratic or transliteration.

A translation (English/German, I can probably cope fine with French/Dutch/other modern European) would be good too but hopefully I'll be providing that anyway.

Some historians suggest that the Chinese may’ve been to the Americas between 1418-1421. Vikings also had some settlements in Nova Scotia in the Middle Ages. Prior to Columbus, did any external people establish (or tried to) any source of trading/commerce network with native American peoples?

In 2001, a historian found a Chinese map of the Americas that supposedly dates back in the early XV century during some expeditions led by Zheng He; though this is still a seemingly debatable source.

More accurately, Vikings had a brief and ephemeral presence in the Atlantic Canada and Southern Greenland back in the Middle Ages.

Just like Tenochtitlan would work as a commercial intersection among north and central american peoples, Lima and its nearby seaports had a great maritime knowledge over the Andean Pacific coast.

Did any external-american people happen to establish any source of commercial network with local-native societies prior to Columbus?

Plus, I’m aware there’s a huge amount of questionable-to-fake historiographical approaches over the presence of non-american peoples in the Americas, I’m so not willing to cross that line at all.

Wouldn't a pressure to develop the Chinese middle class be good for Alibaba?

I might be missing something and of course I'm open to other options but a growing middle class is good for BABA. China has put a lot of pressure on companies to not favor the ultra rich and help develop the middle class. If this is the case Alibaba would stand to benefit because consumers would have more total spending money as a whole. The middle class probably place more AliExpress orders than the billionaires of China. It might effect the bottom line a bit but at the end of the day a strong China economy is a strong Baba.

Looking for ideas for task-based learning projects with middle school Chinese students.

I've just started a job in a private middle school in China. I've come from teaching elementary students for the last three years and although some of the projects I did with some higher grades will be appropriate to try with my new classes, I'm looking for some more ideas.

E.g. Kids in groups of two or three design a pizza restaurant menu, and at the end of the task they will 'order' off of each others menus by phone (one student is the 'chef' and will wait outside until someone gives them an order, which they then come in and reiterate).

Any ideas would be great, the classes are fairly small, 15-20, and the levels are quite mixed.

Thanks in advance.

Looking for large-scale traditional Chinese text transcription (paid)

Hey everyone! I have a project to tackle that requires some outsourcing.

My wife recently gained possession of her late grandfather's memoir, written in traditional Chinese. My wife is fluent in the language and reads typed Chinese very well, but we are struggling mightily with reading her grandfather's handwriting. It's not particularly poor or sloppy -- she just doesn't have much experience reading handwritten Chinese and it's giving her difficulties.

Our hope is to find someone willing to go through this text and type it up in Chinese (traditional or standard, whichever is easier for you). We are not looking for any kind of translation, as a large text like this could potentially lose some of its inherent meaning via translation. We simply want someone who is more comfortable with Chinese handwriting to turn this written document into a typed document.

This memoir is rather sizable. By our estimates, it is roughly 100 pages long, with each page containing about 250 characters.

We know that the magnitude of this project is a bit ridiculous, and we certainly do not expect to ask strangers to take on this amount of work for free. We are more than willing to pay for the transcription services.

Of course, since most language-focused services focus on translation or legal transcription, the price range for this kind of thing is a little fuzzy. As such, we are soliciting price quotes (per 100 characters) for anyone willing to take on this kind of work.

We also plan to break up the work into 20-25 page chunks. We don't want to hire someone for the job and then have them feel they have such an enormous mountain to climb all in one go. This sort of thing can obviously be talked about one-on-one though.

If an individual is interested, I can also share with you a scan of one of the pages to give you an idea of the kind of handwriting you would be dealing with.

I realize the scope of this project is pretty demanding, but I think it's worth it. My wife moved to the US from China when she was 4 years old, and only saw her grandfather a handful of times before he passed away. For me, this is about giving my her a glimpse into her grandfather's life and allowing her to understand him more fully. I can't guarantee his life story will be an interesting read for anyone who transcribes it, but it will definitely mean the world to my wife.

If anyone has any questions at all about this, I will do my absolute best to answer every one of them. Any interested parti

I am looking for creative volunteers to help me write a couple of stories for an English teaching podcast for Chinese students (because my writing sucks haha). Ideally, I am looking for stories 300-350 words in length, doesn't need to be too complicated grammar or vocabulary-wise, and it would be great if they had some moral lesson/teachable moment at the end. After that, I will translate the stories into Chinese. After the 1000th China's crypto "ban" decentralised exchanges are booming. I can't tell for sure where all the trading volume is coming from but I think it's safe to assume that a lot of those users are from China. Perhaps someone with full access to Glassnode can provide some on-chain data to confirm it? But I don't think it's a coincidence that this happened after the "ban". It's been on a rise for the last couple of days not just today.

In the last 24h dYdX have seen a +175% increase in trading volume:
