A list of puns related to "Alpo Suhonen"
First, Don Cherryβs angry Remembrance Day rant singling out immigrants, or the infamous βyou peopleβ rant.
Second, he told his audience (in regards to First Nations people having to work harder to get into the NHL): βFair shake in life! Go out and get your own fair shake in life and work for it. Donβt give me that stuff.β
Third, he has said this about women at hockey games [Transcript: When you come to the games, keep your eyes on the puck. Iβm telling ya, Iβve seen some awful smacks, and itβs always a woman yapping away there. Look at the game.] [Authors note: I agree with the βkeep your eye on the puck take, cause those fuckers are fast. Nothing else in that statement, though].
Fourth, In 2010, Cherry appeared as a special guest for the inaugural meeting of Toronto new city council and shocked those present with his comments.
> βIβm being ripped to shreds by the left-wing pinko newspapers out there β itβs unbelievable,β he said. βThis is what youβll be facing, Rob, with these left-wing pinkos β they scrape the bottom of the barrel.β He predicted that [Rob] Ford would be the greatest mayor Toronto had ever seen.
> βAs far as Iβm concerned you can put that in your pipe you left-wing kooks.β
Fifth, he is a climate change denier. When he was pressed on Coachβs Corner, he said this. [Transcript: βDavid Suzuki, left wing kook, youβre in Vancouver. Itβs warm out there. Why donβt you come to Toronto, weβve been freezing for two months β¦ what is this, warming trends? Weβre all dying of cold, and heβs talking warming trend. What?β]
Sixth, he basically called former enforcers pussies for not wanting too much fighting in hockey.. [Transcript: The ones Iβm really disgusted with β¦. The bunch of pukes that fought before βStu Grimson, Chris Nilan, Jim Thomson β the reason, the reason that theyβre drinking, drugs and alcoholics is because they fight.β βYou turncoats, you hypocrites. Thereβs one thing Iβm not, itβs a hypocrite. You guys, you were fighters, and now you donβt want guy
I looked it up and it appears that there have been at least three (if not only) European coaches in NHL history:
The first one is a Stanley Cup champ with the Hawks. The latter two were very short-lived stints.
My questions are: do you recall if this has ever been discussed by the media? Do you see this as a problem? Do you think it's purposeful or is it possible European players just prefer to retire and work in coaching/management back home? Do you think this will change?
I'm curious to know other fans' knowledge/opinions cause though I never thought of this until now, I find it pretty crazy considering all the player talent Europe has contributed to the league.
Cheers!
Edit: I stand corrected. The LA Kings and the Chicago Blackhawks have European assistant coaches, Marco Sturm and Tomas Mitell.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.

The big sports site (Sportnet) calls Rikard GrΓΆnborg the most qualified coach candidate outside of North America. They suggest that the events of recent weeks may cause the Swede to have something going on. 30% of the league's players are Europeans and 55% of the rookie class 2019/2020 season comes from Europe.
> - It shows where the trend is going. That is why I think it is only a matter of time before the NHL clubs in the US and Canada glance at some of the excellent European coaches here, says Rikard GrΓΆnborg.
When Rikard GrΓΆnborg had announced that he would quit as the Head coach for Tre Kronor (Swedish national team) after the last season, speculation began that his career would continue in the NHL, he was placed in the Buffalo Sabers and Anaheim Ducks, among others.
> - Hockey is hockey. The challenge for the NHL is to open up a new chapter. Hiring coaches with new backgrounds would only be healthy, says Rikard GrΓΆnborg.
The current contract with Zurich in Swiss NLA is written over two seasons, according to previous information on Sportnet he does not have a clause that allows him to leave for an NHL club.
>- I am extremely happy with where I am in the Swiss league, but like a player you always want to know what the next step is as well. I wanted to add my resume to a high profile job, people I talked to said that this is the toughest job in Europe, says Rikard GrΓΆnborg.
As the Swedish national team captain, he became known for the good and open relationship that the national team leadership built up with the players, which resulted in the NHL players coming to the World Cup to a greater extent than before. The players have had to set the agenda for continuous personal meetings, the coach room is always open for players to come in and chat and he does not want to sit behind a desk.
> - If they want to talk hockey then we talk hockey. If they want to talk about something else, we talk about something else. That is my initiative, but it is their meeting. They get to know me better and I get to know them better. It's a skill as a coach, says Rikard GrΓΆnborg.
It is now 19 years since a European coached in an NHL club, Finnish Alpo Suhonen and Czech Ivan Hlinka left the Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins after the 2000/2001 season. Rikard GrΓΆnborg from Huddinge studied and worked as a coach in the USA f

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

A topic of discussion that popped up after Jukka Jalonen's great success leading Finland to a World Championship is how desirable of a coaching hire he should be going forward. The only problem with that is, as the topic points out, that even the best of the best among European coaches don't actually get consideration for NHL jobs.
The only time in NHL history when Europeans were given a shot was the '00-'01 season when Chicago hired Alpo Suhonen and Pittsburgh hired Ivan Hlinka. Suhonen could not perform a miracle with a bad Chicago team that had 3 70-80 point seasons before he came there, had another under him, had a stray good season the year after and then another 4 seasons below 80 points. Hlinka got the Pens to the conference finals and was then let go 4 games into the next season, after which the Pens were terrible (below 70pt seasons) for the next 4 years. In the last 18 years no non-NA coach has been given a chance to lead an NHL team.
For the record, Jalonen has said he'd be interested in coaching in the NHL, but that he doesn't have a "network" to get hired. That was back in 2016. We'll see if he'll get a job offer after this, but he's been good and he's been willing for a while now and nothing has come of it. Keep that in mind the next time your team hires another Willie Desjardins type.
[Edit: We've had our first good solid NA kid come through and downvote everyone. Well done.]
Me grabbing a soda from my (what I thought was) half full 12pk...
Notices there's only 2;
Me: "Awe man... This is a damn bird box!" Her: "What the hell does that mean?!" Me: (Pulls both cans out & shows them to her) "It's only got Toucans."
I'm not ashamed to admit the look on her face was glorious.
I was just sitting there doing nothing.
