Reddit Votes: 2013 Liberal Party of Canada Leadership Election

The Liberals lose all their seats in Quebec to the NDP in the 2011 Election which dissuades most major candidates from the region (Dion, Trudeau, Garneau) from running for the leadership in 2013.

2020 Ontario Liberal Party Leadership Election

I just wanted to discuss the candidates a bit. We're a week away and it seems like Steven Del Duca is very clearly the front runner who is expected to win by a landslide.

Now I only know a bit about 2 of the candidates: Steven Del Duca and Alvin Tedjo.

Steven Del Duca because he was Transportation Minister and was known for that joker/Tim Hudak ad https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/tim-hudak-attack-ad-puts-him-in-role-of-the-joker-laughing-as-hospital-explodes-liberal-apologizes He's more likely to be the popular choice since he's a bit more on the right and would be more likely to pull voters from the PCs. But also talking with someone who use to work with him a bit, I didn't get the greatest feeling.

Alvin Tedjo isn't as well known. He got a bit of press from his opinion on school boards and wanting to join the Catholic and Mainstream boards into one. Definitely further to the left, closer to the NDP, which means more a more split vote. But from what I've seen definitely would be my preferred candidate to lead(Again not knowing a lot about many of the other candidates).

Although again I am not as well informed on the candidates as I would like to be. Plan to watch some of the debates over the weekend.

Other people have opinions, stories, the good and the bad on any candidates?

Edit: Updated link, as my previous one didn't have a picture of the ad.

The 1971 Liberal Leadership Election | The Swastika's Shadow

Overview

The Liberal Party, furious at the loss of seats in the election, has placed the blame of their loss squarely on Jeremy Thorpe. Thorpe finally reappeared after months of solitude to announce that he was resigning as Party Leader, effective immediately. Now, the fight between the two factions of the Party, the Classical Liberals & the New Liberals, has come to a head. Will Age & Experience win out? Or will the vigorous energy of the Youth seize the day?

David Steel

The 33 year old Scottish MP is the de-facto leader of the New Liberals and is hoping to finally take the reins of the Party from the Classical Liberals. Steel argues for a more socially liberal mindset, such as a legalization of abortion for "extremely limited cases" and a loosening of divorce laws, however he has not gone as far as Labour has on social issues. He also calls for a return to the Liberal policies espoused in the early 1900s, such as the People's Budget, progressive taxation, increased social welfare, and Keynesian & Beveridge Economics. He also calls for environmental protections and a swift end to the South African War. On trade policy, he has stated that "Protectionism is necessary to preserve certain jobs & industries."

Richard Wainwright

The 53 year old former Chancellor of the Exchequer is once again the candidate of the Classical Liberals, although this time he is running a much more spirited campaign. Wainwright is running as an orthodox Classical Liberal, supporting a slash in taxes across the board and a reduction in "wasteful spending," so as to achieve a balanced budget. He also wants to slash government regulations on many industries, move towards free trade, and "significantly" cut back the size of the government, and as such, is a supporter of de-evolution. He does however also support labour rights and the continuation of the current social security system as is.

Results

Steel went into the Leadership Election expecting to win big, even telling his supporters to "Go back to your constituencies, and prepare for government!" However, it was Richard Wainwright who would win solidly with nearly 55% of the vote. Wainwright's acceptance speech focused on the reinforcement of Classical Liberal policies stating that "Our government has become far more involved than it needs to be in the affairs of our citizens. Power breeds corruption and we are seeing the effects of this today as our leaders are abandoning the needs of the comm
