A while ago ZachofTables educated this sub on the subject of Palestine supporter hypocrisy towards Zionist “collaboration” with the Nazis. Some members of the pro-Palestine community were very very offended about the first sentence (odds are they didn’t read past it), which stated that the Palestinians and especially their leader Haj Amin Al-Husseini collaborated with the Axis powers during WWII. This statement caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth, with the main talking point being that Haj Amin Al-Husseini was “a puppet” who had no actual power. I’m here today as a follow up to show that is not the case.
From the beginning of his life, long before British appointments, Al-Husseini had high status in Palestine. He was the son of the mufti of Jerusalem. His clan was one of the wealthiest and most influential in Palestine. He was highly educated as well.
Contrary to the claims that Al-Husseini was a puppet, in the 1920s he actively worked to destabilize British rule, including inciting a riot in Jerusalem. He was appointed Mufti in 1923.
In 1922, Al-Husseini became president of the Supreme Muslim Council, which was a British creation, but also gave him considerable power. The Council controlled the Waqf funds and the Islamic courts of Palestine. The courts were the ones that appointed teachers and preachers, allowing Al-Husseini to shape the minds of the population.
In 1936, however, the Palestinian Arabs formed their own political organ, the Arab Higher Committee. This was NOT a British creation, and was in fact eventually outlawed by the British. It was comprised of the leaders of Palestinian Arab clans and parties and is described by Wikipedia as “the central political organ of the Arab Palestinians in Mandatory Palestine.” And who was the chairperson of this organ? Haj Amin al-Husseini. This committee represented the Palestinian Arabs and met with the British to represent Palestinian Arab interests.
So these claims that Husseini had no power and represented no one but himself are false. He was the head of the closest thing the Palestinian Arabs had to a government and he controlled the holy sites, the education, and the mosques of Palestine. And, of course, he actively collaborated wit
