[Division Game Thread] Los Angeles Dodgers @ San Diego Padres; Tuesday, August 24th, 7:10pm PDT
Soooo, I totally dropped the ball on this. I usually schedule these on Sunday night for the week, but I was packing for a cross-country flight and completely forgot. If I forget to schedule a post or if it doesn't work, just make you're own thread and I'll sticky it when I can.
Aaaaannnyway, the Dodgers drive down the 5 to face the Padres in a series that isn't as meaningful as we hoped but the Dodgers will still find a way to lose, I'm sure. This kicks off a week of threads featuring the boys in blue.

In 24th century Starfleet, what postings exist for a Commander-ranked Officer within the Operations and Sciences divisions, aside from Chief Officer postings?
I tried asking this in the ST:LD sub, but as many thoughtful replies as I got, most missed my point and some were even wrong entirely - surely due to my sloppy wording. Iβve refocused my question, and hopefully you guys can help me out. Just to establish my understanding, assume I am familiar with the ranks themselves, one-off promotions like Troi, and the fact that βDoctorβ simply overrides Crusherβs rank appellation.
My question boils down to this: In 24c. Starfleet, what postings exist for a Commander-ranked Officer within the Operations and Sciences divisions, aside from Chief Officer postings?
For context: In the first Lower Decks episode, Ensign Boimler (command division) seems to insinuate that most Starfleet officers who hold the rank of Commander attained it by ranking up through the command division. When trying to inspire a Sciences division Ensign, he proposes that she could one day be CMO. This piqued my interest, because if I was understanding it correctly, Sciences and Operations division would be a fairly stagnant route through the ranks, not having many three-pip commanders around. Yet we see people like Crusher and LaForge reach Captain, and Janeway was Sciences once upon a time IIRC. So it happens, I just can't figure out where all the Commanders would go and what all they'd do. Is Starfleet pumping out ships just to produce CMO and Chief Engineer postings for their Commanders?
Also an ancillary question: does Starfleet implement an βup-or-outβ scheme with its officers? This is the assumption I made and why this whole thing piqued my interest, but reflecting on it, I canβt think of any time in any Trek that something like being mustered out was mentioned.
And a shout-out to the mods, apologies for the initial click-bait title, thanks for being cool.
