#It's Time!

Yes, it's that time of year once again, the time for the oldest, most historic soccer tournament in the Americas! We'll see amateur teams from the 5th step of the US Soccer pyramid fighting for their chance to play against the giants of MLS, and everything in between!

But first, here's a little more info for anyone new to the tournament.

#The Cup

The US Open Cup is a knockout tournament featuring an incredible 91 qualified teams from all over the United States. From the preliminary round through the fourth round, more teams and leagues join in, culminating with the American MLS sides. But you don't need to be a big pro team: every single soccer team in America can fight for qualification for this tournament. This makes it the biggest, most unique, most exciting, craziest tournament all year!

This is the 102nd running of the US Open Cup, the third domestic soccer tournament in the world. The only cups older than ours are the English and Scottish FA cups.

You might think, in a tournament with sides hitting $10-20 million a year in salaries, there's no way some little amateur Sunday-league team could win over an MLS giant.

But you're dead wrong.

Yes, that's the minnow side Cal FC from the 5th tier felling the Portland Timbers. Don't believe me? Here's the full replay. There's also a history of NASL sides like the New York Cosmos and the Carolina Railhawks and the formerly USL-PRO Orlando City all defeating prominent MLS clubs. And this is only going back a few years.

#The Name

What's in a name? Let's break it down, the 2015 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

First up, 2015. This is the calendar year in which this edition will be played. All good so far.

Second, Lamar Hunt. Major player in the original NASL, huge activist for getting the US the 1994 World Cup, major invester in MLS, seems like a reasonable name to use.

Third, US. It's the United States, so still all good.

Fourth, Open, it is in fact open to any team from MLS, NASL, USL

Now obviously this is just one very strong NPSL market and a small sample size, and a lot of teams in the NPSL have absolutely horrible attendance in the hundreds. This is still cool to see a team in the fourth division of American soccer have success and is definitely a positive sign for the league, as well as something the NPSL and its fans can brag about.

Novak Djokovic

People are more likely to be critical when you're number 1. With Djokovic having lost at Montreal and at Cincinnati, one must still remember that he has only missed one final all year long, and that was the first one of the year in Doha. He's still heading into the US Open as the favorite to win. Yes, the other point is that Djokovic has performed the weakest at the US Open even though historically, he plays his best tennis after the US Open.

Even so, he's reached the semis of better every year since 2007. His form suggests he'll at least reach the semis. Right now, his main rival is Roger Federer. Andy Murray recently beat him, but his chances are good to beat Murray. Nadal is really a big unknown but given his form, he's expected to come in second to Djokovic.

Roger Federer

With his win in Cincy, Federer returns back to number 2 (Murray briefly held that spot), and shows he's in good shape. Federer's style is so risk-intense that the main worry for Federer is having an off game like he did back at the Australian Open. Federer's main strategy is to hold serve, then take his chances on return. Fed doesn't return as well as Djokovic, Murray, or Nadal, but he holds quite often (not dropping serve at Cincy) and quite quickly which means he's less prone to tiring.

Fed took an extra week off and skipped Montreal to play a tournament that he's played historically well. Yesterday's win was his 7th title. Experts say the surface is faster than at the US Open, and thus, points were much shorter than the last hard court encounter for Fed and Djokovic (at Indian Wells).

Roger came into Cincy with a new strategy, the kamikaze return, an extreme version of what Murray does. He runs all the way up near the service line, half-volleys and comes into net. He doesn't do it frequently, but it's just enough to rattle his opponents. Federer says he'll need to learn when to hit the shot and when not to hit the shot, but that he's done it for fun in practice for some time.

Andy Murray

Murray only needed to beat Federer to retain the number 2 ranking heading into the US Open. However, Federer beat him in Cincy in much the same way he beat him at Wimbledon. Fed's primary goal is to hold serve. Murray was unable to break Federer's serve in the Cincy semis, so despite improvements in his own game, Murray still has to figure out how best to get into Fed's
