2022 French presidential election (poll, candidates details in below)

Yeah, it doesn't say this subreddit is only for the US.

Candidates explained:

  • Emmanuel Macron (La RΓ©publique en Marche 'The Republic on the Move' β€” Renew Europe group): socially and economically liberal (libright), progressive and globalist, heavily pro-EU, made his government a broad coalition ranging from socialists to conservatives. Elected president in 2017 (24.0%, 66.1% in runoff).
  • Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement National 'National Rally' β€” Identity and Democracy): conservative and nationalist, anti-globalization, anti-immigration, right-wing populist, usually identified as far-right but has come more in favour of a welfare state recently. Supported leaving the Eurozone and perhaps the EU but hasn't spoken much about it since 2017. Ran in 2012 (17.9%) and 2017 (21.3%, 33.9% in runoff).
  • ValΓ©rie PΓ©cresse (Les RΓ©publicains 'The Republicans' β€” European People's Party): liberal-conservative, has been trying to keep together the more moderate and radical wings of the party. Can be identified center-right to right-wing, emphasized her competence and ability to govern, and compared herself to Thatcher. President of the Île-de-France region (12M inhabitants, elected in 2015 and 2021).
  • Γ‰ric Zemmour (ReconquΓͺte 'Reconquest' β€” Non-inscrits): far-right writer and pundit known for regularly hitting the news with controversial statements. Believes in the 'great replacement', already fined more than once for incitement to racial discrimination and hate.
  • Jean-Luc MΓ©lenchon (La France Insoumise 'Unbowed France' β€” The Left): left-wing to far-left, left-wing populist calling for a "6th republic", anti-globalization and anti-EU, called for a 100% income tax on earnings over €360,000 a year, took more extreme stances recently such as vaccines skepticism. Ran in 2012 (11.1%) and 2017 (19.9%)
  • Some other relevant candidates:
    • Yannick Jadot (EΓ‰LV-G/EFA): leftist ecologist, seen as more dogmatic as other european greens, supports broadly leftist, ecologists, and animalist policies
    • Christiane Taubira (*~S&D): center-left, legalized gay marriage when in government but has recently led a vague campaign, made controversy after refusing to explicitly call French-guyanese people to vaccinate themselves. Ran in 2002 (2.3%).
    • Anne Hidalgo (PS-S&D): center-left, social-democratic; mayor of Paris (elected in 2014 and 2020), seen unfavourably after her impact on the capital city (#SaccageParis movement)
