So in school at least in the US we are taught that the Arab-Israeli war in 1948 started when in May the Arab States attacked Israel in response to their gaining independence. We are also taught that they were angry that the Jews got most of the land, even though most of the land given to the Jews was unfarmable desert, and that they were much more powerful than the Jews so it was a miracle that they were defeated. But recently I learned that that is actually false, there were many massacres by the Jewish militias as early as April 1948, for example with the Deir Yassin Massacre. This was completely ignored in my schooling. I also learned that the reason the Arabs were mad was mainly because Zionist leaders had been engineering a plan to remove the Arabs from Palestine, and because the UN gave the Jews almost all of the farmable land. And I also learned that the Zionist militias had a major upper hand in military power compared to all of the Arab states combined. Which version of the story were you taught in school?
