Hi guys and welcome back to another year of the Oscars Death Race! After another tough year, we finally have something new to look forward to and hopefully a great season to follow!!
As always we're going to start the season with our pre-screener thread where we'll have predictions for this year's awards. This is of course not definitive of what will be nominated but a great place to start on your own Death Race!
So please comment below with your own predictions for this year as well as any screeners you've come across. As usual, this thread will be regularly edited between now and the ceremony. Obviously linking to pirated content is against Reddit's TOS so we'll just be posting the titles of the screeners which one can use to search for the files by their own means.
Please feel free to comment below or message myself with the titles of any predicted nominations you are aware of or sources where they can be legitimately streamed (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc). For now the list is sparse and messy so bear with us. If you notice we have the title of a particular screener that you had problems with or you've found a superior copy of please let us know.
Obviously we'd all prefer to be able to have access to see movies in the cinema where they are meant to be seen, but due to members of this sub around the globe who don't get films made available to them, we think this resources is very important. If you have the opportunity to support the films you love please do. And don't forget to join us on Discord!
See last year's thread if you're new to how this works- hopefully this thread will look similar to that or to this one here by the time we're done.
Happy Death Race to you and your kin!
β’ The movie came out around peak awards season (December 1995).
β’ It starred Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro and Val Kilmer.
β’ It was critically acclaimed and made $187 million at the box office against a budget of $60 million.
β’ Director Michael Mann helmed critical and/or commercial hits with Thief, Manhunter and The Last Of The Mohicans.
I thought perhaps Warner Bros might have reserved their award campaign budget for a more successful/acclaimed film. However, I looked at the Academy Award and Golden Globe nominees and the only WB films that were nominated were Batman Forever (Cinematography, Sound, Sound Effects Editing), A Little Princess (Art Direction, Cinematography) and Something To Talk About (Kyra Sedgwick for the Best Supporting Actress), all of which were shut out.
It seems odd to me that Heat, with all of the attributes Academy voters usually love, didn't make the cut or was not submitted for consideration in the first place.
This year, the In Memoriam Segment at the 2022 Oscars will be overshadowed by the loss of legends like Betty White. But, will the Academy take a special moment to mention the cinematographer who died on the set of Rust? The year that a crew member (camera assistant Sarah Jones) died on train tracks while making Midnight Rider, there was an outcry in the industry about safety. (Did you know the director pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter?) But she was not featured in the In Memoriam segment. Cowards.
The Alec Baldwin/Rust shooting shouldn't just get swept away by the machine that caused the accident. The film industry is constantly under pressure to produce in unsafe conditions in order to meet budgetary and time constraints. Halyna Hutchins untimely passing was the result of a workplace injury that was entirely preventable if the financial producers had not exerted undue pressure to produce work in unsafe conditions to meet unrealistic timeframes.
At the 2015 Oscars, Meryl Strep presented the In Memoriam segment. What she read prior to the video montage was really moving. Who will read the segment this year, and will they acknowledge the workplace accident on the Rust set?

Voice acting has been around for as long as animation has been around, which I think is around 90 - 100 years but unfortunately, voice acting performances are very rarely given recognition, particularly in regards to award ceremonies. I personally feel like this is a bit of a travesty as voice performances are a HUGE part of animated movies, TV shows, etc. There have been so many amazing voice performances in the last 30+ years that for the most part, go completely disregarded aside from the Annie Awards of course. So I think award ceremonies like the Oscars, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guilds, etc. should add a category that would allow those performances to get the recognition they deserve.
Crypto is more than just technology. And the best tech can lose very badly.
People get into crypto for money. But it is not just that. It gives people, especially millennials and Gen-Z a sense of ownership ("I have a stake in this network"), shared value ("I'm a part of this vibrant and die-hard community"), and freedom ("I take my own risk to be rich or get rekted"). As a result, building a vibrant community and brand awareness is absolutely critical to the success of any crypto project. It is also a huge weakness of Hedera whether we like it or not.
The HBAR Foundation today has announced her partnership with AR Rahman to build a brand-new NFT music platform focused on Indiaβs independent music community, a move that we can only see its truly huge impacts on Hedera network and HBAR in particular in the next couple of months.
AR Rahman, two-time Academy Award winner, two-time Grammy Award winner, Golden Globe Award winner, is a proven Winner. His huge network and impact not just in Indian but the world music and entertainment industry is a real deal.
And imagine, if his NFT music platform turns out to be a huge business success (which likely to be the case), who else will join the party? Adele? Taylor Swift?
This is the influencer that we have been asking for. This is the kind of publicity we have been dreaming about. Let the hype train start. Let's hype the substance.
