Happy New Year everyone!
I wanted to update everyone on my dad.
Sorry for the delay but a few days after I made my original post, my dad went into the hospital due to poor blood pressure. The following morning, he had a heart attack, the amazing hospital staff stabilised him but 20 minutes later he had another heart attack.
He miraculously survived again, thanks to the amazing staff. My brother called me and I was at the airport before I even knew what was fully going on.
When I got to the hospital the next day, he was just waking up and it was awful seeing him like that.
He stayed in the hospital until Christmas Eve when he was then discharged. On Christmas day, I gave him all of the cards that everyone so lovingly sent and I just can't even tell you the happiness he felt.
He is only now just getting back to some normalcy, he's eating, walking, and trying to put weight on. A scan last week showed that the cancer has not spread and we are now working on building his strength to see what the next steps will be with his cancer treatment.
To all of you, I can't even explain how amazing it was to see the joy on my dad's face while opening each and every card and even presents. It really was the most beautiful Christmas as I was really sure that I had lost him. Not many survive not just one, but two heart attacks. We are truly blessed.
My dad also wanted to say a few words:
"Well I don't even know what I can say. The last month has been a blur. I died twice, and for some reason I was spared. Me, a soon to be 67 year old man who has not done anything amazing in life, I just get on with it and do what I can.
Coming home on Christmas Eve was surreal. To spend Christmas Day with my daughter and my son, and 6 month old granddaughter, I never thought it would happen. I then, was handed a huge sack of cards, I honestly had no idea what my daughter had been up to and all I can say is wow.
Wow that each and every one of you kind strangers, took the time out of your day to send me, a silly old man, cards, beautiful letters, even gifts! Books, a scarf, socks, a jumper, t-shirt and sweets. It really is just unbelievable.
I will never be able to thank you all enough but you truly made this old boys Christmas spectacular. I appreciate every single one of you and you have made the biggest impact on my lif

For the past couple years I've been in a bad spiral, and in the last 6 months it got so bad. I've gained so much weight, I'm ashamed to see friends and family, and I never felt so helpless and alone. I never want to feel that again.
Good day everyone. As the title says, I behaved properly all year long and Santa gave me two wonderful retro gifts. The Illusion of Gaia SNES cartridge and the Star Ocean Second Story original PSX discs. I decided to jump back in time and started with the oldest one. What a wonderful era the 90s!
On a side note, I made sure this review is 100% spoiler free. If you’ve never played the game, don’t be afraid.
Before jumping into the subject, let’s do a small background check about myself. As a gamer, I've been a huge fan of JRPGs since my childhood. What got me into the genre are games like Final Fantasy IV and Super Mario RPG (I know I’m old) and played more JRPGs that I can count. I’ve heard about Illusion of Gaia since my early days as I had a poster with a screenshot of the game but never had the chance to try it. Like they say: “It’s never too late to have fun”.
Also, I’ve decided to play the game without looking at a walkthrough. I’m a bit familiar with the concept since I’ve already played Terranigma a couple years ago (such an awesome RPG) and felt confident enough to blindly journey through the game.
Illusion of Gaia
Play time: 15h ish (approximative as the game didn’t track my play time)
Background
For those who have never heard about the game before, Illusion of Gaia (named Illusion of Time in Europe and Oceania) is the second part of an rpg trilogy between Soul Blazer and the excellent Terranigma (often referenced as the Soul Blazer Trilogy) developed by Quintet. The series focuses on delivering action packed games with a JRPG twist.
Gameplay
Since the focus is about action and gameplay, I’ve split this section into subsections to better structure its content.
Exploration
Contrary to other action-rpg classics (such as Secret of Mana), Illusion of Gaia only lets you control a single character at all times during exploration and combat. This character is the main protagonist and reflects the player into the game.
Map design has been split into two main categories: Neutral zones and Hostile zones. In neutral zones, you can only move and interact with NPCs or the scenery. Their main purpose is to progress the story through dialogues/cutscenes and introduce new areas related to plot advancement. On the other hand, hostile zones are areas filled with enemies where the player has to fight its way through by executing combat actions to defeat surrounding threats.
The flow of exploration is generally: Neutral
