Sci academic question about pain, tooth wear, & dentine sensitivity

Hi! This is not a q as a patient. Im a PhD student, biological anthropologist. I work with teeth in a totally diff way than you all. Basically Im working on a writing project and remembered something a tech said to me once. I cannot, however, find citation in the clinical lit. Am hoping for your help.

So the tech said that with prolonged wear, either from attrition or from something pathological like bruxism, that eventually the nerves in the teeth recede or shrink- not that the tooth dies. Just that the person might not actually feel as much pain as one would expect.

In archaeological pops serious wear is common- dentin exposure all the way. We assume these people are in intense pain. But are they? I see that the pain theory has to do with dentinal tubules and theres some evidence that erosion exposes the tubules and therefore the nerve- more than abrasion and other wear. This could be one explanation. But whats this nerve shrinking thing? This true? Any citations please?!

TLDR: do nerves in the teeth shrink overtime making worn teeth (not due to sudden trauma) less painful? citations?

PS the flair- you need another flair category like academic/ clinical/ biological interests

Thank you all so much!
